CBS has hinted at the return of a former cast member for season 23 of NCIS. The show, one of television’s longest-running dramas, is gearing up for a major comeback in the 2025-2026 season after a less successful previous season. Despite only a few episodes airing so far, season 23 has already explored storylines including the aftermath of Parker’s father’s death, the return of McGee’s character Thom E. Gemcity, and a special crossover event with NCIS: Origins.
Though season 23 of NCIS hasn’t finished yet, it’s gradually moving towards its mid-season finale. While these fall finales aren’t typically as major as the season-ending ones, they often include surprising moments to keep viewers excited for the show’s return after the winter break. CBS is likely to continue offering these kinds of surprises, especially for dedicated, longtime fans, and they’ve already started doing so with a recent announcement.
According to Paramount, the ninth episode of NCIS season 23 will be the fall finale and will feature Knight on her first NCIS: Elite mission. The episode, titled “Heaven and Nature,” will be particularly exciting as it involves the team tracking down a former colleague. Meanwhile, McGee and Torres will be working to recover a truckload of stolen toys, and Parker will discover the truth about his mother. You can find a complete summary below.
I’m really excited about the next episode of NCIS! It looks like McGee and Torres are on a heartwarming mission to get back a truckload of toys meant for the Navy’s Christmas drive – what a great cause! Plus, we’re finally going to learn the truth about Parker’s mom, which I’ve been waiting for all season. And to top it all off, Knight gets her first big assignment with NCIS: Elite, hunting down an old teammate. It’s going to be a packed episode!
Considering the storyline possibilities, Ellie Bishop is the most likely candidate to return. Her departure from NCIS was set up for a long-term, undercover operation after she trained with Gibbs’ team. Since we haven’t heard from her character since season 18, now could be the perfect time to bring her back.
While it’s possible Tony and Ziva could reappear on NCIS, their current storyline—happily settled in Paris with their daughter Tali, where Tony runs a security business and Ziva teaches languages—doesn’t quite align with the show’s direction. Another potential return could be Jack Sloane, who chose to remain in Afghanistan to continue her work. Her story could connect well with Knight’s, but a compelling return would likely require a reunion with Gibbs.
As a big fan of NCIS, I’m really excited about the possibility of seeing some old friends return in season 23! CBS has already started bringing back characters we love – they reintroduced Vera, Ziva’s former replacement, and are even doing NCIS: Origins with Mark Harmon as Gibbs and Muse Watson as Franks. It feels like the network is finally realizing how much fans appreciate seeing familiar faces and are smartly using the show’s history to give us what we want.
