Ncuti Gatwa Reveals the Real Reason Behind His Eurovision Withdrawal

Ncuti Gatwa himself shared the reason behind his decision to not represent the UK as the spokesperson for this year’s Eurovision, stating that he had to decline because of conflicting job obligations.

Back in early May, I was thrilled to learn that I had been chosen to represent the UK as their official spokesperson for an upcoming event. This role would not only reinforce my connection with the UK but also extend the reach of Doctor Who, following our very own “Interstellar Song Contest” episode. As a lifelong fan, it’s exciting to see how my time on Doctor Who continues to open doors in unexpected ways!

A few days afterwards, on May 15th, it was revealed that the actor would no longer be reading out the UK jury votes because of unexpected issues. Instead, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor took his place.

On Sunday, during an interview with Laura Kuenssberg, Gatwa was asked to explain the reasons behind his decision to withdraw from his earlier declared position in the Eurovision event.

Gatwa shared: “Things unfolded quite intriguingly regarding that project. I had withdrawn from it much earlier than the announcement. I’m not sure why they made the announcement when they did.

However, my schedule was incredibly packed due to numerous work commitments related to The Roses and Doctor, resulting in a great deal of media attention.

Journalist Kuenssberg inquired about the actor’s decision to withdraw more deeply, asking, “There were rumors suggesting Israel’s involvement in the competition caused controversy, and it was thought this might be the reason for your withdrawal. Given your past support for the Palestinians, could this have influenced your decision in any way?

Gatwa responded: “No, I was just very busy.”

When asked whether he did tune into Eurovision at all, he replied: “I didn’t, no, I was busy.”

The announcement was made by the BBC that Ncuti Gatwa would not be fulfilling his role as spokesperson for the Eurovision Grand Final, which was revealed after the second semi-final. Originally, they had stated: “Due to unexpected events, it regrettably turns out that Ncuti Gatwa can no longer perform his duties as Spokesperson during this weekend’s Grand Final.

Indeed, it’s with great pleasure that I share the news: Live from the UK, the beloved Friday night Kitchen Disco Diva on BBC Radio 2, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, will be announcing the jury’s decision in real time.

Ellis-Bextor expressed during that time: “I adore Eurovision, and it’s a great honor to be included in the 2025 Grand Final. It’s truly an honor to reveal the UK’s jury score on such a unique program, which consistently emphasizes music above all else. I am incredibly excited about presenting the renowned twelve points from the United Kingdom!
