Good heavens, it appears a rather sticky wicket has developed. A firm, Brittany N. Griffiths of Illinois – a name which, frankly, sounds like a particularly trying aunt – has been experiencing a spot of bother. Namely, a surreptitious visit from those chaps who enjoy poking about where they shouldn’t; hackers, you know. The upshot of this unpleasantness is that the personal details of a positively frightful number of Americans – 478,188, to be precise – are now at risk of being…well, rummaged through.
The incident, it seems, occurred sometime last May. It took them a week to realise something was amiss, which speaks volumes, doesn’t it? One pictures a rather flustered office and general air of ‘Good Lord, what’s happened now?’ The hacking, or ‘external system intrusion’ as the chaps in white coats prefer to call it, compromised a dataset containing such alarming bits and bobs as full names and contact information. A truly ghastly prospect.
And Maine, poor things, appear to be particularly afflicted, with over 284,000 residents facing possible inconvenience. This, naturally, caused the authorities to start sending out official notices, a task which I suspect involves a good deal of paper and a considerable amount of sighing. These notes will no doubt advise everyone to batten down the hatches, place fraud alerts, and generally behave as if their financial lives are about to be examined by a particularly thorough inspector.
Naturally, the legal eagles are already circling, scenting the possibility of a spot of litigation. Potential compensation is being touted for expenses incurred in protecting one’s identity. One shudders to think of the paperwork involved. It’s all frightfully tiresome, isn’t it? And quite possibly, a bit of a nuisance. One can only hope everyone involved has a stiff drink at the end of the day.
