Getting started with a settlement in Necesse 1.0 might seem tricky, but it’s really satisfying once you get the hang of it. This guide will walk you through everything – from taking care of your settlers and setting up automated production, to keeping your town safe.
Start with a Settlement Flag
Every settlement needs a Settlement Flag. If you began the game by choosing the Village Elder’s House, you’ll find one in your starting chest. Otherwise, you’ll need to craft it yourself.

First, plant your flag to create a new settlement. You’ll then be able to give it a name and define its borders. Soon after, you’ll meet visitors – look for the question marks above their heads! You can either trade with them or ask them to become residents.

Tip: Settlers who arrive naturally are usually cheaper to hire than those found in cities.
Build Proper Houses for Settlers
Settlers need a proper home to stay happy. Each house must have:
- Four walls and a door
- A bed (mandatory)
- A light source (optional)

If a new settler arrives without a bed, go to the Settlers Tab (by pressing the ‘C’ key) and assign them one. Any available beds will be automatically taken by new settlers as they arrive.
Understand Settler Jobs
Every new settler comes with a specific job. Examples include:
- Animal Keeper
- Alchemist
- Farmer
- Forester

Whenever you can, try not to hire basic workers. Skilled colonists have special abilities that can make your colony run much more smoothly.
Automate Farming and Resource Collection
Once you start farming, your people will automatically gather the crops. To collect wood, simply designate an area as a Forestry Zone over the trees you want to use.

With an Animal Keeper, you can also set Husbandry Zones for animal management.

Fertilize Zones are optional. They simply make crops grow faster when handled by farmers.

Automate Crafting and Production
You can add any workbench or container to your automated production line. Simply click the greenhouse icon on the workstation to include it.

Once enabled, settlers can craft items based on set recipes. You can:
- Add recipes

- Set crafting limits

- Copy entire work orders

This system automates tasks similarly to how it works in RimWorld. It allows your settlers to take care of crafting and other work, freeing you up to explore. The setup is consistent across all workstations, meaning you can easily configure them once and let your settlers handle the rest on their own!

Organize Storage and Priorities
Use storage chests smartly. Each chest can be configured to:
- Accept certain items

- Set priority levels

Designate a separate chest for initial item drops. This allows higher-priority chests to automatically organize items from that first chest. To keep everything tidy, use the search bar to quickly find and manage your storage.
Manage Your Settlers
Open the Settlers Menu to manage individual colonists. You can:
- Command movement

- Equip gear

- Set diets

- Define work priorities

Equip your team with armor and weapons to increase their health and defense during raids. You can also assign work priorities – such as farming, crafting, or hauling – to help them focus on the most important tasks.
Create and Restrict Areas
You can define zones or areas to restrict where settlers go. For example:
- Keep your Alchemist near their lab.
- Confine non-fighters during raids.

This system adds strong control, especially for large settlements.
Maintain Food and Happiness
People settling in need both food and a comfortable place to live. Just having a chest stocked with food will keep them from going hungry. You can keep your food supplies full by adding more sources like farms, berry bushes, or apple trees. To keep them happy, consider these factors:
- Good food quality
- Lighting
- Decorative items
Decorating and adding lights can improve your settlers’ spirits. When they’re happier, they work more efficiently.
Prepare for Raids
Raids can be enabled or disabled at world creation.

If active, enemies will eventually attack your settlement. You have two choices:
- Lock settlers inside and fight alone
- Arm everyone and defend together
Equip your settlers with spare weapons and armor to prepare for the worst.
Final Tips
- You can transfer settlers between multiple settlements later.
- Use revival potions if someone goes down in combat.
- Keep experimenting with setups to find what works best for your playstyle.
Success in Necesse 1.0 comes down to building an efficient, well-balanced settlement and being prepared for anything. If you set things up right, your colony can flourish with minimal hands-on control.
