NES Game From 1991 Returns With Surprising New Release

A game originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991 has unexpectedly been re-released this week on modern platforms. Most popular NES games were platformers, action-adventure titles, or role-playing games. While the NES had games from other genres, those types of games didn’t really become popular until later consoles. That’s why it’s surprising to see a strategy game from the NES making a comeback with a new version.

Hamster, the game developer, is releasing a new version of L’Empereur on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch tomorrow, June 11th. The strategy game first came out on computers and was published by Koei, before being released for the NES in 1991. That NES version was the only console release for over thirty years. Now, Hamster is bringing L’Empereur to modern consoles, making it easier for fans to play or rediscover the game.

In L’Empereur, you take on the role of Napoleon, striving to rescue France from turmoil, rise to become emperor, and unite Europe – all while shouldering the expectations of the French people. The game challenges you with realistic, turn-based warfare on a hexagonal map, where terrain and building bridges are crucial. Success also depends on clever diplomacy, combining your military strength with political savvy.

Hamster recently released L’Empereur as part of its “Console Archives” series, which focuses on re-releasing classic games from the NES and other systems that have been hard to find. The new version of L’Empereur for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 will include improvements like save states and the ability to customize the controls.

Okay, so L’Empereur isn’t exactly a super famous classic like some other games in the Console Archives series, but it’s awesome they’re bringing these hidden gems back to life and making them playable! If you’re interested in checking it out, the new version will be $7.99 when it drops on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop.
