A classic role-playing game originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 is now available on Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Premium members, as well as PC Game Pass subscribers, can play it now. However, those with the basic Game Pass Essential plan, and anyone playing on an Xbox One console, will not have access to this retro title.
It’s currently unclear how long Final Fantasy III will stay on Xbox Game Pass, but right now, those with qualifying subscriptions on Xbox Series X|S and PC can play it without buying it for $17.99 from the Microsoft Store. Since the game came to Xbox Series X last September, players have been enjoying it, giving it a 4.5-star rating on the digital store.
Not One of the Best Final Fantasy Games, But a Nostalgic One
If you’re new to the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy III isn’t the best place to begin. It’s a product of its time – a classic RPG from the 1990s – and there are better Final Fantasy games to experience first. In fact, we ranked it last among the core Final Fantasy titles.
If you fondly remember playing this role-playing game back in the 90s, downloading it will bring back great memories. However, very few people outside of Japan have actually played it. That’s because it was originally only released in Japan, meaning players needed to import the game and understand Japanese to play. It was quite popular within Japan, though.
As you can see in the trailer, this isn’t the classic NES version of the game; it’s the Pixel Remaster. While that means it won’t have quite the same nostalgic feel, it offers a smoother, more updated experience.
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster came out in 2021, featuring updated pixel art, a remastered soundtrack, and helpful improvements that bring a more contemporary feel to each game in the series.
I’ve been trying to find out how long this awesome NES game will stay on Xbox Game Pass, but Nintendo hasn’t said yet. The good news is, while it is on Game Pass, we subscribers can actually buy it with a sweet 20% discount – which is a really nice perk!
