Bad Brain Game Studios, a game development company in Montreal founded by NetEase Games in 2023, is shutting down on November 17th, according to studio head Sean Crooks in a LinkedIn post.
The game studio was working on a project called The Midnight Riders, which looks like an action adventure game set in the 1980s, based on a recently released preview. Bad Brain Game Studios has announced that the game itself, and the ideas behind it, are available for another company to take over or collaborate on, and NetEase Games is willing to talk to publishers who are interested in finishing the game.

An Update on Bad Brain Game Studios
We’re sadly announcing that Bad Brain Game Studios is closing down. Our final day will be November 17th.
So, we’ve been working hard to find someone new to help us with the game, but honestly, things haven’t really come together yet. I’m super thankful for everything NetEase Games did for us – they gave us the time we needed to try and make it work. The whole team really put their hearts and souls into this project, constantly pushing to make something amazing. We were always trying new things, both creatively and technically, and I’m really proud of what we accomplished together. It really shows how talented this team is.
The positive reaction to our project shows how much creativity and hard work went into it. Although the final result wasn’t exactly what we expected, I know we connected with players and fellow developers who appreciated our game. Thank you to everyone who supported us, offered encouragement, and believed in our vision.
Now that we’ve finished development on this game, we’re still looking for partners to help bring it to more players. Both we and NetEase are open to discussing potential acquisitions or partnerships with publishers or studios who are interested in continuing the game’s story. We’re proud of what we’ve built and hope to see this world enjoyed by a wider audience.
We’re excited to share a highlight reel from the project with the public. This will allow our team members to showcase their amazing work and help them find new opportunities.
We can help you find top-tier developers, artists, and writers. Just get in touch, and we’ll happily make the connection.
I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported us throughout this journey. Your encouragement and faith in our vision meant so much. Although we’re ending this chapter earlier than planned, the heart of what we built at Bad Brain will continue through all the amazing people who helped make it happen.
