NetEase Games has been cutting costs in its gaming department for several years, and Nagoshi Studio is the latest to feel the impact. The studio, founded by Toshihiro Nagoshi – known for the Yakuza series – and currently working on Gang of Dragon, will have its funding stopped in May, according to Bloomberg.
So, I was reading up on this new game, and apparently it’s gotten super expensive to finish – like, ¥7 billion, which is around $44.4 million! Sources are saying that’s why NetEase is pulling out. They could keep working on it, but they’d have to buy the rights and everything else, which is a huge cost. It’s a bummer, honestly.
Reports indicate that Nagoshi is currently seeking new financial backers for the game, but hasn’t had any success yet. Without sufficient funding, the project could be cancelled. Nagoshi Studios was founded in 2022, and development has been underway since then.
Revealed at The Game Awards 2025, Gang of Dragon is an action-adventure game with beat ’em up combat, set in a world inspired by the Kabukicho district. Players take on the role of Shin Ji-seong, portrayed by Ma Dong-seok, a member of a Korean crime organization. The game will also feature shooting and exciting car chases, with opportunities to personalize your vehicles.
