Netflix Adapting Major Video Game Series That Once Bombed at the Box Office

Netflix plans to breathe life into one of the most renowned video game series, aiming to rectify past disappointments from previous live-action attempts. Adaptations of video games have become akin to superhero films, with countless untapped stories and universes waiting to be translated onto the big screen or small. Unfortunately, this genre has experienced many setbacks in the form of poor adaptations that either lost their essence during production or failed to captivate fans. However, it appears that Hollywood has started to crack the code in recent times, by collaborating more closely with game creators to help them transform these properties.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t contain my excitement as Netflix is set to bring the Assassin’s Creed universe to life through a live-action TV series! This project has been in the pipeline for at least five years now, with both Netflix and Ubisoft announcing a slew of projects centered around Assassin’s Creed back in 2020.

However, progress on this project has been rather sluggish, leaving many fans like me eagerly awaiting updates. Intriguingly, during this period, Ubisoft has successfully developed a Splinter Cell anime series. But it seems that the wait is finally over, as the live-action Assassin’s Creed project appears to be gaining momentum, promising a new adventure for us fans very soon!

Live-Action Assassin’s Creed Series Moves Forward at Netflix

Roberto Patino and David Wiener have been appointed as the executive producers for Netflix’s “Assassin’s Creed” television series. The production has received the green light and is now moving forward, but it remains undisclosed if all the scripts have already been penned down. Nonetheless, it’s anticipated that Netflix will accelerate the process to bring this series to reality soon. The duo expressed their enthusiasm about being involved in the show, as they have been fans since its inception, although details about whether the story will be a fresh one or based on existing game plots are yet to be revealed. Given the success of “Assassin’s Creed” as an anthology series, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if it features a new narrative intertwined with characters from the games.

In their joint statement, Wiener and Patino expressed their longstanding admiration for Assassin’s Creed, which they’ve followed since its launch in 2007. They mentioned that working on the show daily leaves them feeling inspired and awestruck by the diverse narratives that Assassin’s Creed presents. They emphasized that beneath the action, adventure, and parkour lies a fundamental human story about individuals grappling with themes such as purpose, identity, destiny, power, violence, sex, greed, and vengeance.

Above all, this production emphasizes the power of human relationships, transcending borders and timeframes. It serves as a reminder of what we risk losing as a species when these bonds weaken. We have an extraordinary team working with us at Ubisoft and Netflix, and our goal is to produce a compelling experience that resonates with viewers worldwide.

Previously mentioned, there was a live-action film adaptation of “Assassin’s Creed” around ten years back. Regrettably, it didn’t fare well at the cinema due to its muddled presentation. The narrative was fresh within the game’s universe, but it struggled under the constraints of a PG-13 rating that mismatched the games’ tone. Here’s hoping this series will address the flaws of the movie and offer a tale that appeals to fans.

Additionally to the already announced Assassin’s Creed games, there are whispers of a potential remake for Assassin’s Creed 4 in development. The exact launch date for the next game is undetermined, but there’s speculation that the rumored remake might be imminent. Given the recent debut of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s reasonable to expect the next mainline Assassin’s Creed title to drop in fall.
