Netflix has become a major player in animation, finding success with both anime and original American animated series. Popular anime like Sakamoto Days, Baki Hanma, and Beastars have performed well, as have American shows such as Devil May Cry, Castlevania, Bojack Horseman, and Haunted Hotel. Despite these hits, Netflix has cancelled several animated series, and surprisingly, one of them was created by acclaimed director Zack Snyder.
According to a recent report from What’s On Netflix, three shows – Twilight of the Gods, Exploding Kittens, and Good Times – have been cancelled after just one season. While fans had begun to expect these cancellations due to the lack of renewal announcements, the news is still disappointing. The cancellation of Twilight of the Gods, also known as Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods, is particularly surprising, as the creators previously suggested a second season might be possible. However, the show works well as a complete story with its existing episodes.
The Twilight of Netflix Animation

I’ve noticed a pattern with Zack Snyder’s work on Netflix – a lot of his big ideas seem to get cut short. We saw it with Twilight of the Gods, which only lasted one season, and now the Rebel Moon movies are stopping after just two films. He did give us Army of the Dead, and they made a prequel, Army of Thieves, but it surprisingly didn’t involve any zombies! While Snyder is still working on new things, it feels like his ambitious animated projects with Netflix are currently on hold.
Both Good Times and Exploding Kittens faced challenges on the streaming service. Good Times received overwhelmingly negative reviews, landing at just 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. While Exploding Kittens, adapted from the popular card game, earned a “Fresh” rating, it seems critical praise isn’t enough to ensure a show’s renewal. Ultimately, how many people watch remains the most important factor.
Despite recent cancellations, Netflix has a strong lineup of new animated series planned for 2026. First up is Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an animated spin-off of the hit show. The second season of Devil May Cry is also on the way, and Netflix will premiere Living The Dream, an original series created by a storyboard artist who worked on The Amazing World of Gumball.
