The situation surrounding Elon Musk’s criticism of Netflix has evolved. A high-ranking Netflix executive has spoken out for the first time since Musk started a social media campaign calling for people to “Cancel Netflix,” addressing the broader concerns about the platform’s content.
At the Bloomberg Screentime conference, Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters explained that when you create content for people all over the world, some viewers are bound to be offended. He stated this is simply a natural part of reaching a global audience.
Netflix’s Response to the Cancel Netflix Backlash
Although Peters didn’t say it directly, his comments followed a recent post by Elon Musk on X, where Musk asked his followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. He claimed Netflix was pushing a “woke” agenda and featuring content about gender issues in shows for children.
According to reports in *Variety*, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos explained that because the streaming service has such a large and varied audience, it’s natural for people to have different opinions about what kind of content should be available.

According to Peters, a good service will always have something that at least some users dislike or find problematic. In fact, he believes that if everyone loves everything, it means they aren’t pushing boundaries enough and aren’t fulfilling their responsibility to challenge and improve.
As a lifelong movie fan, I always appreciate when studios remember their core job: entertaining a huge audience. That’s what Peters said – their goal isn’t to push a specific agenda, but to create films that nearly a billion people worldwide can enjoy. It’s about broad appeal, not narrow viewpoints.
We’re in the business of providing entertainment for everyone,” he explained to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw. “People have very different tastes and ideas about what they want from their entertainment.
“We Do Not Respond to Government Pressure”
When asked about government attempts to alter Netflix’s content, Peters clarified the distinction between following the law and facing political influence. Many interpret this as a subtle disagreement with Congressman Tim Burchett’s call for Netflix leaders to be investigated in Washington.
Congressman Tim Burchett is calling on Netflix executives to appear before Congress to discuss concerns about shows with mature themes involving transgender characters being marketed towards children.

Peters stated they don’t take direction from the government. They will only respond to official, legally binding requests, and they make those responses public to ensure transparency.
He pointed out that Netflix rarely removes titles due to legal requests, with only about five instances happening outside the U.S. in the past year, even though the service operates in many different countries.
Background: Musk’s Campaign and the Broader Debate
The controversy started when Elon Musk voiced his disapproval of Netflix for including themes of gender identity in the animated show *Dead End: Paranormal Park*, which is designed for children as young as seven.

Elon Musk’s statements led supporters and Representative Burchett of Tennessee to suggest a congressional investigation into the shows Netflix offers children. Burchett explained he wants to understand the reasoning behind Netflix’s content choices and what goals they might have.
Netflix had remained silent until Peters’ recent appearance.
Reading Between the Lines
Peters argued that Netflix is so big and operates in so many countries that it can’t be expected to meet the cultural standards of any one nation. He suggested that even strong criticism actually shows Netflix is succeeding, not falling short.
Although some investors appreciate this hands-off approach, it probably won’t calm worries from parents and critics who, like Elon Musk, believe entertainment aimed at families is becoming too focused on specific beliefs.

These statements could also make future political reviews more difficult. Peters has made it clear that Netflix will only follow legally mandated government requests, and won’t be swayed by public campaigns or cultural expectations.
The Bottom Line
Musk and those who agree with him will probably see Peters’ comments as further proof that Netflix doesn’t take parents’ concerns seriously. Netflix, on the other hand, likely intended the interview to highlight its image as a worldwide service that embraces diverse viewpoints – and views causing offense as a sign of its broad impact, rather than something it did wrong.

The debate over Elon Musk’s potential impact on Netflix, and more broadly, the differing views of tech creators and their critics, remains unresolved.
