Netflix Finally Has an Answer to Heated Rivalry With a New TV Series From the Same Creator

Last year, the popular HBO Max series Heated Rivalry – a hockey romance – generated a lot of buzz over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. A second season is already confirmed, and now Netflix has announced a similar show created by the same person behind Heated Rivalry. This new series is also based on a well-loved book.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jacob Tierney, the creator of Heated Rivalry, is working with Netflix on a new series called Alexander. The show will explore the relationship between Alexander the Great and his teacher, Aristotle. It’s based on Annabel Lyon’s 2009 novel, The Golden Mean, and Netflix has already approved it for production as a full series.

I’m really excited about this new project! Tierney is taking the reins as writer, director, and executive producer on a film called Alexander, and it’s great to see they’re bringing in Brendan Brady, who was also key to the success of Heated Rivalry. Plus, Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan from Aggregate Films are on board as executive producers, which is always a good sign – they know how to back a winning story.

Tierney says it’s a lifelong dream to adapt the book, having been captivated by Annabel Lyon’s The Golden Mean for years. He and Brendan are thrilled to be working with Aggregate and Netflix to bring this exciting story to the screen.

As a huge cinema fan, I’m really excited about Alexander. From what I understand, it’s going to be a gripping, intense drama, and a central part of the story is the fascinating relationship between Alexander and Aristotle. Apparently, Aristotle travels to Macedonia to become Alexander’s tutor, and that’s when things really start happening for Alexander. It’s incredible to think that neither of them could have known just how much their connection would influence the empire, or how much of a lasting impact they’d have on history.

Jinny Howe, who leads scripted series for the U.S. and Canada at Netflix, praised Jacob Tierney as a highly sought-after and innovative creator. She expressed Netflix’s excitement about collaborating with him on Alexander, noting they were immediately impressed by his take on Annabel Lyon’s popular novel. The series offers a fresh, energetic, and both grand and personal perspective on the classic dynamic between a teacher and student. Netflix believes this intense drama will appeal to viewers worldwide and is eager to produce it with Jason Bateman and his production company, Aggregate Films.

With a compelling main character and complex relationships, Alexander has a lot going for it. Combined with the show’s focus on both political intrigue and romance, it’s poised to be a big success for Netflix and has the potential to reach a large audience.

While a release date for Alexander hasn’t been announced, the second season of Heated Rivalry is expected to come out in 2027. You can currently watch the first season on HBO Max.
