Since its release in late June, *Kpop Demon Hunters* has been a huge hit on Netflix, becoming the platform’s most-watched movie ever. The animated film has been in the top 10 for 14 weeks and has already been viewed over 300 million times. While *Kpop Demon Hunters* has been the biggest movie on Netflix this year, it hasn’t stayed at number one the entire time. Recently, a new romantic comedy gained popularity and pushed *Kpop Demon Hunters* into second place.
Netflix released its list of the top 10 most popular movies for the week of September 15th to 21st. “The Wrong Paris” was number one, having premiered on September 12th. It moved up from second place the previous week (September 8th-14th) and topped the charts with 21.8 million views, just ahead of “Kpop Demon Hunters” which had 21.2 million views.
The Wrong Paris Overtaking Kpop Demon Hunters Isn’t a Surprise

In the movie *The Wrong Paris*, Miranda Cosgrove plays Dawn, a young woman who tries out for a reality dating show hoping to win money for art school. She mistakenly believes the show is filmed in Paris, France, near her dream school, but is surprised to discover it’s actually in Paris, Texas. As she competes, she begins to fall for the show’s bachelor, cowboy Trey McAllen (Pierson Fodé). While *The Wrong Paris* received mostly positive but mixed reviews (scoring 67% on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s perhaps unexpected that it’s gaining more attention than the popular *Kpop Demon Hunters*, though not entirely surprising.
With fewer mid-sized movies being made for theaters, Netflix has become a go-to source for romantic comedies. Several of their rom-coms, like *Players*, *Hot Frosty*, and *To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before* (which became a popular series), have been hugely successful. Rom-com fans now turn to Netflix for new releases. Recently, the movie *My Oxford Year* even outperformed *Kpop Demon Hunters* in popularity, with the two titles frequently trading places on the charts.
It will be interesting to see how long “The Wrong Paris” remains the most popular title, surpassing “Kpop Demon Hunters.” “My Oxford Year” was only number one on Netflix for a week, and stayed in the top ten for just four weeks before dropping out entirely. While “Kpop Demon Hunters” has stayed popular for a surprisingly long time, most Netflix movies this year have seen a quick surge in views followed by a decline. This is typical – new releases attract a lot of attention initially, but viewers quickly move on to whatever is new next.
Looking at how other Netflix original movies have performed this year, *Kpop Demon Hunters* has been a huge success. It’s done much better than expected and is already planned to have a sequel, launching a new series. Since it was released, *Kpop Demon Hunters* has consistently stayed in the top two most-watched movies. While other films might occasionally take the number one spot, *Kpop Demon Hunters* is likely to remain a top ten hit for a long time, even after *The Wrong Paris*’s popularity fades.
