Netflix Is About To Lose a Genuine Horror Masterpiece at the Worst Time Possible

Few horror movies are truly essential viewing for every fan, but Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Wes Craven’s Scream are often considered must-sees. Psycho essentially launched the modern slasher film, while Scream cleverly updated the genre with its self-aware style. These films are genre masterpieces that have inspired many others. Currently, a classic horror film from the 1970s, considered a cornerstone of the genre, is about to leave Netflix, so fans should watch it soon.

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a truly iconic horror film – scary, well-made, and hugely influential. If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s essential viewing. However, it will be removed from Netflix on February 18th, which is unfortunate timing given the recent announcement that A24 is creating a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV series and movie. The original 1974 film, which started it all, was inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein and focuses on Leatherface, a terrifying, chainsaw-wielding killer who is part of a disturbed, cannibalistic family.

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Redefined Horror

It’s hard to overstate how much The Texas Chainsaw Massacre impacted horror films. Following Psycho, which essentially created the modern slasher genre, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre pushed it to a new level of intense realism. Surprisingly, despite showing very little actual gore, the 1974 film is incredibly terrifying. It achieves this through suggestion, letting the viewer’s imagination create the most horrific details, and building intense psychological dread. Its low-budget, documentary-style filmmaking and relentless, gritty feel further amplify the suspense. The movie also popularized now-common horror elements, like the ‘final girl’ character and the portrayal of killers as inhuman, masked, and silent figures.

Often considered a groundbreaking and controversial horror film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a classic of the genre and launched a successful franchise of nine movies. Following the 2022 Netflix release, the future of the franchise looks bright. A24 has acquired the rights and plans to create not only a new film with Glen Powell and Dan Cohen as executive producers, but also the first-ever Texas Chainsaw Massacre television series.

Where to Stream The Texas Chainsaw Massacre After It Leaves Netflix?

Don’t worry, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre won’t be hard to find even after it leaves Netflix. You can still stream it on services like Prime Video, Peacock, and AMC+, or watch it for free on Tubi.
