Fans of historical fiction are in for another disappointment: a fantastic series, filled with everything you could ask for in an adventure story, is leaving Netflix next week. Seriously, it has everything – action, thrills, intense moments, and even surprisingly heartfelt characters and diverse representation. It went further than many other adventure shows of its time, like Game of Thrones, by taking narrative risks and showing real emotional depth. Its departure will leave a big gap in Netflix’s lineup.
Black Sails is a remarkably well-crafted show, featuring a cast that truly delivered exceptional performances and had fantastic chemistry. Though technically a prequel to Treasure Island, the series stars Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, and Zack McGowan, alongside many other talented actors. The story unfolds on New Providence Island, a pirate haven brimming with danger and intrigue, and focuses on the fearsome Captain Flint. He’s fighting for his own survival and the island’s freedom, and forms an uneasy alliance with Eleanor Guthrie, the governor’s daughter, who has her own ambitions to seize control. With compelling characters like the ruthless Charles Vane, the unpredictable duo of Calico Jack and Anne Bonny, and others with hidden agendas, Black Sails is a gripping and intense series that doesn’t hold back.
Black Sails Ate and Left No Crumbs
Many TV series at the time seemed to imitate Game of Thrones, including its excessive and gratuitous sex and violence, which didn’t add anything meaningful to the plots. While the first season of Black Sails initially showed some of this influence, it quickly established its own unique identity. The show proved to be intelligent, thoroughly researched, and remarkably complex – qualities many other series lacked the boldness to explore. Every detail, from the sets and costumes to the historical accuracy of the characters, was clearly meticulously crafted, with a realistic level of roughness added for dramatic effect. As critic Phelim O’Neill put it, the show is “worth watching just to see this expertly constructed story build towards a bombshell that, for once, really does change everything.”
Though the show heavily emphasizes relationships between characters, the action is surprisingly strong. Each season manages to raise the stakes with bigger, more elaborate fights and ship battles that consistently impress viewers. Once the series found its footing, it perfectly blended all its strengths into a unique and compelling vision. As one viewer put it, the second season is a masterpiece of entertainment. The show fully embraces its characters and doesn’t hold back, offering a consistently engaging experience that avoids the pacing issues of the first season. From the plot and characters to the dialogue, action, and visual effects, everything is exceptionally well done – prepare for an incredible ride!
