Netflix Is Adapting One of the Best Graphic Novels of All Time, Despite Four Failed Attempts

Netflix has a history of adapting comic books and graphic novels, and it’s often been successful. Shows like The Umbrella Academy, Sweet Tooth, Locke & Key, The Old Guard, and Sandman have all proven popular with viewers. Beyond those, Netflix also partnered with Marvel to create shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. Now, the streamer is taking on another big project.

Netflix is adapting the critically acclaimed graphic novel Black Hole into a new series, after winning a competitive bid for the rights, according to Deadline. Horror fans will be especially excited to hear that Jane Schoenbrun, known for directing the films We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow, will be directing the series. While previous attempts to adapt Black Hole haven’t succeeded, this new project seems promising.

Netflix’s Black Hole TV Series Is Decades in the Making

Originally published as a series of 12 issues between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, Black Hole is now considered a landmark graphic novel. It won an Eisner Award in 2006 when the complete story was first collected in one volume. The story follows teenagers in 1970s Seattle who face a terrifying consequence for early sexual activity: a disease that transforms them into monsters, among other frightening outcomes.

Knowing Schoenbrun’s previous work, Black Hole feels like a natural extension of their style, making it a strong addition to their filmography. Both of their earlier movies use horror and pop culture references to explore formative moments in people’s lives, often across generations. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair examines the experience of growing up online, focusing on viral trends and the search for identity in digital spaces. Similarly, I Saw the TV Glow explores how young adults look back on shared childhood experiences and realize how even seemingly unimportant memories shaped who they became.

The biggest challenge for the upcoming Black Hole TV series isn’t getting it made, but the fact that many have tried—and failed—to adapt the story before. Director Alexandre Aja attempted a film in 2006, followed by David Fincher in 2008 and again in 2013, but neither version came to fruition. In 2018, Rick Famuyiwa also tried to develop a film, but that project also stalled. So, while we’re excited about Netflix and Jane Schoenbrun taking on Black Hole, we hope this time the adaptation finally succeeds.
