2026 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for anime! The Winter 2026 season just wrapped, featuring highly anticipated sequels like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2. Plus, Netflix is consistently adding new anime to its library each month, including popular titles like Love Through a Prism and Cosmic Princess Kaguya. As the anime industry booms, Netflix is becoming a major player, investing in more and more exciting projects.
As a frequent Netflix user, I’ve noticed they’re constantly updating their anime selection – adding great shows almost every month. But with new content comes removals, and it’s always a bit disappointing to see something go. I just learned that on April 1st, 2026, they’ll be taking down Inu-Oh, a really well-regarded dark fantasy movie from the same studio that made Dandadan, Science SARU.
What Is Inu-Oh About?

This often-overlooked series comes from acclaimed director Masaaki Yuasa and his studio, Science SARU, and boasts a wonderfully distinctive animation style. The story is set 300 years after the defeat of the famous Heike Clan, as chronicled in the important historical text, The Tale of the Heike. It follows Inu-Oh, a gifted dancer born with a disfigurement and believed to be cursed, and Tomona, a blind musician who plays the biwa.
Tomona lost both his sight and his father while searching for an old sword in the waters of Dan-no-ura, a famous historical battlefield. Both being outcasts, they connected deeply and became a performing duo, using their art to reveal the hidden history of the Heike Clan.
Why Is Inu-Oh Being Removed?

Shows and movies are rarely officially announced as being removed from streaming platforms, but it usually happens when the licensing agreements run out. Platforms also sometimes remove less-watched titles to save money and keep their library size manageable. While licenses can be renewed, it’s impossible to predict if or when a particular anime will be available again.
Netflix is taking down more than 100 shows and movies this year, including several anime titles like Mob Psycho and Sirius the Jaeger. While Inu-Oh is a standout anime with great storytelling and visuals, it’s unfortunately among those being removed, and its chances of returning are uncertain. Other anime are also being taken off the platform, but some titles may become available again after a few months or more.
