It’s becoming all too common for shows to disappear from streaming services, and now Netflix is losing a truly great comedy series. Just because a show starts on Netflix doesn’t mean it will stay there forever. This particular comedy, considered by many to be a masterpiece, is leaving the platform tomorrow. It almost left last year, but a deal was made to keep it for a little longer – that deal has now expired, and unfortunately, Netflix subscribers will no longer be able to watch it.
After a previous warning and a short extension, all five seasons and 84 episodes of Arrested Development will officially leave Netflix tomorrow, March 15th, according to Whats-On-Netflix. The show, created by Mitchell Hurwitz, centers on a wealthy family who’ve lost their fortune and the son, Michael, who tries to hold them together. It’s considered a classic comedy that many viewers are already familiar with. For longtime Netflix subscribers, removing Arrested Development will be especially notable, as it was a key part of what made Netflix a leading streaming service in its early years.
Netflix Saved Arrested Development From Cancellation

The critically acclaimed but low-rated comedy Arrested Development originally aired on Fox from 2003 to 2006 before being canceled. For years, it was difficult to find and watch. Then, in 2013, Netflix revived the show, marking one of the streaming service’s first big moves into creating exclusive content.
The show’s return was a bold attempt to bring back the now-famous cast, even with their demanding schedules. Season 4 experimented with a non-traditional, out-of-order format, which Netflix later rearranged into a standard, chronological order under the title Fateful Consequences. Though the fifth season in 2019 followed a more familiar structure, the revival wasn’t always a hit with everyone. However, for fans, any new content was worth the wait.
Arrested Development Is Still One of the Most Rewatchable Comedies Ever

When people talk about sitcoms you can watch over and over, Arrested Development is often at the top of the list. It was a smart, layered comedy that was ahead of its time, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like a cozy comfort show on your first watch. However, after a few viewings, it becomes incredibly familiar and enjoyable, like reconnecting with an old friend. The show was also unique in its willingness to let jokes build slowly, and that’s a big part of why it’s so rewarding to rewatch. You’ll often notice new details – a funny visual gag in the background, a hint of things to come, or a clever reference to an earlier moment – even after watching it multiple times.
Okay, so Netflix is taking Arrested Development off its platform, and let’s be real, nobody has time to re-watch the whole series before it’s gone. But if you’re desperate for one last dose of the Bluth family’s chaos, I’ve put together a list of the absolute must-see episodes. Consider these the essential viewing for a final, frantic Arrested Development marathon.
- “Top Banana” (Season 1, Ep 2): The origin of “There’s always money in the banana stand” and the “Dead Dove” meme.
- “Pier Pressure” (Season 1, Ep 10): A masterclass in the show’s structure, featuring the one-armed J. Walter Weatherman teaching a traumatic lesson.
- “Afternoon Delight” (Season 2, Ep 6): An incredibly cringey and hilarious look at the family’s complete lack of self-awareness during a Christmas party.
- “Development Arrested” (Season 3, Ep 13): The original series finale that ties a bow on the Fox era with a chaotic yacht party.
Enjoy what’s currently available, and it might be a little easier to cope with the fact that there won’t be new episodes for a while, especially with the possibility of Arrested Development returning to Netflix or another streaming service. Right now, the show’s future is uncertain. While Netflix could potentially renew the deal, it seems more likely that Disney will regain the rights and make the show available on Hulu or Disney+.
