Netflix is no longer in the running to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. Warner Bros. Discovery’s board announced late Thursday that a revised offer from Paramount is better than Netflix’s previous bid of $83 million, which only covered the streaming service, studios, and related content. Warner Bros. Discovery gave Netflix a few days to improve its offer, but Netflix quickly decided to withdraw from negotiations after months of discussions.
Netflix announced on Thursday that they’ve decided the deal is no longer worth the cost. They explained that while the deal was potentially appealing under the right circumstances, it wasn’t essential to their plans.
Netflix has decided not to compete with the latest offer from Paramount Skydance. According to a statement, the cost to match their bid is too high and doesn’t make financial sense, despite Netflix’s usual careful spending. (Source: NPR)
Netflix Stepping Away From the Warner Bros. Means Paramount’s Deal is Almost a Sure Thing
The ongoing dispute between Netflix, Warner Bros., and Paramount has taken a significant turn, bringing a resolution closer. Although not final, Warner Bros.’s board has indicated it prefers a proposal from Paramount over Netflix’s offer. This effectively means the deal with Netflix is likely to be canceled, and Warner Bros. is set to move forward with Paramount instead. Initial concerns about potential antitrust issues with the Netflix deal have become less relevant with this development.
As a movie lover, I think a lot of us in Hollywood are breathing a sigh of relief now that Netflix isn’t buying Warner Bros. There was real worry that Netflix would drastically change how movies are released, with their head, Ted Sarandos, openly saying he doesn’t think long theatrical runs are good for viewers. That meant films might skip theaters almost immediately and go straight to streaming! Beyond that, people were concerned about the future of Blu-rays and DVDs, and honestly, a lot of DC fans were nervous about what would happen to the DC Universe under Netflix’s ownership. It’s good to see that deal off the table.
We’ll need to wait for more information to emerge regarding the recent changes in the Warner Bros. sale process – and understand what Paramount potentially winning this deal means for the future of the entertainment industry.
