When filmmakers revisit older stories with reboots or remakes, it’s crucial to find a fresh approach to justify the new version. If a reboot is too close to the original, audiences might question its purpose. The team behind last year’s Anaconda decided to add a comedic, self-aware twist. The film follows four friends who attempt to reboot their favorite childhood movie, Anaconda, only to find themselves genuinely hunted by a deadly snake in the jungle. While Anaconda earned a respectable $135 million worldwide on a $45 million budget during the crowded holiday season, it’s now reaching an even wider audience.
According to FlixPatrol, which tracks what’s popular on streaming services, Anaconda is currently the most-watched movie on Netflix in the U.S. It’s beating out other popular choices like The Bad Guys 2 and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. Anaconda was added to Netflix just recently, on March 25th, and has quickly become a hit.
Why Anaconda Is a Streaming Hit on Netflix (and Will There Be a Sequel?)

I remember when Anaconda first came out last Christmas – it didn’t get a lot of buzz, and the reviews were pretty mixed. It ended up getting lost amongst all the other big movies that were already playing. It only came in fifth place its opening weekend, behind films like Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2, and The Housemaid. Even Marty Supreme, which was up for Oscars, did better! Honestly, a lot of people seemed to miss it in theaters, but now that it’s on streaming, I’m seeing a lot more people check it out. It’s just easier to give a movie like this a chance when you can watch it from the comfort of your own home, you know?
Anaconda is a great choice for streaming because it doesn’t take itself too seriously and is just plain fun. It playfully pokes fun at Hollywood’s obsession with reboots, like the movie 21 Jump Street, while still delivering plenty of exciting moments. After a tiring day, people often look for lighthearted, big-name comedies to relax with, and Anaconda fits the bill perfectly. Plus, the film stars popular comedic actors Paul Rudd and Jack Black, which is a major draw for viewers browsing platforms like Netflix.
I really enjoyed Anaconda when it came out, and it did okay in theaters, but I haven’t heard anything about a sequel. Honestly, I’m starting to think it’ll just stay as a one-time thing, even though it’s been getting popular again on streaming. The movie relies so heavily on making fun of itself and the original that I think it would be really hard to do that trick again. 22 Jump Street managed a good sequel, but that was rare! Plus, most critics thought the first Anaconda didn’t quite nail everything it was trying to do, so another one would be a big gamble and might not be as good.
While Anaconda might not be a perfect movie, it’s still a standout in the series. It successfully blends comedy and horror, and it knows exactly what kind of film it is. Considering how bad some of the other Anaconda movies have been, this reboot is surprisingly good. The actors deliver strong performances and have a great rapport with each other. Hopefully, the 2025 Anaconda film will follow in the footsteps of the 1997 original and become a beloved cult classic over time.
