Netflix Just Added Every Episode of an Overlooked Animated Masterpiece

Adult animation has become incredibly popular lately, and Netflix has jumped on the trend. They offer a wide range of shows for grown-ups, including hits like BoJack Horseman, Love, Death & Robots, Arcane, and Castlevania. But you might have missed a truly excellent animated series that recently became available on the platform.

The French animated series Samuel, created by Émilie Tronche, has become a big success in Europe, gaining over 35 million views in just six months. While it hasn’t reached a wide audience outside of Europe yet, that’s about to change! All 21 episodes of the first season are now available worldwide on Netflix, starting February 5th. Each episode is short – less than seven minutes long – and good news for fans: a second season is already in the works with French broadcaster Arte, though a release date hasn’t been announced.

Samuel Is an Emotionally Resonant Coming-Of-Age Story

Samuel is a charming coming-of-age story told through simple, black-and-white animation that matches its heartfelt tone. The show follows 11-year-old Samuel, a shy boy navigating the ups and downs of growing up in the early 2000s. Voiced entirely by Tronche, Samuel chronicles his experiences – from trying to understand adults to figuring out friendships and first crushes – in his diary, offering a relatable glimpse into the transition from childhood to adolescence.

Despite its short length and simple animation style – which feels almost like a child’s drawing – Samuel is a surprisingly powerful and thoughtful story. It beautifully captures the awkwardness and emotion of growing up, with a realistic and honest voice. Created entirely by one person, Tronche, the series feels incredibly personal and stands out from typical animated shows. It explores universal themes of friendship, first crushes, and figuring out who you are in a way that feels genuine and relatable. The show is set in the early 2000s, which adds a touch of nostalgia and enhances its emotional impact, especially for those who remember that time. Plus, with short episodes, it’s easy to get hooked and watch the whole series in one sitting.

What’s New on Netflix?

With the fantastic show Samuel being so binge-worthy – all 21 episodes are perfect for a single viewing – Netflix users will be happy to know there’s plenty more to watch this February. The streaming service has recently added several great options, including Season 18 of Heartland, Season 3 of The Way Home, all three seasons of the Night Court reboot, and all five seasons of Search Party.
