The popular Disney+ series is gaining attention again with its new sequel, and there’s a growing possibility it will soon be available on Netflix. As the streaming world changes, Netflix has been adding shows from other services like HBO Max and AMC+, and this Disney+ series could be next.
I’m so excited to hear that The Handmaid’s Tale is coming to Netflix! As a big fan, I’ve been following June Osborne’s incredible, and often heartbreaking, fight against Gilead for years. It’s amazing that all six seasons – all 66 episodes! – will be available in parts of Europe and Latin America starting May 5th or 6th. It’s especially cool since the sequel, The Testaments, just finished airing. For those who don’t know, the show is based on Margaret Atwood’s book and it’s set in a really scary future where the U.S. has become a totalitarian state called Gilead. In this world, women have lost all their rights, and those who can still have children are forced to become Handmaids, basically servants forced to have babies for the powerful elite. I can’t wait for more people to discover this powerful story!
Could The Handmaid’s Tale Come to Netflix in the U.S.?
U.S. viewers will still need a Hulu subscription to watch The Handmaid’s Tale for now, but its availability on Netflix internationally suggests it might eventually stream in the U.S. too. Disney has been bringing several shows originally made for Hulu to Netflix to generate revenue, including Castle Rock, Solar Opposites, and 11.22.63. This makes it likely that The Handmaid’s Tale will also become available on Netflix in the U.S. in the future.
Even though all six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale are currently available on Hulu, where it’s branded as a “Hulu Original” in the U.S., MGM Television actually owns the show and controls where it’s distributed. This means that when Hulu’s exclusive rights end – the exact date is unknown – MGM could move the series to another streaming service. In fact, MGM has already been licensing many of its shows to Netflix in the U.S. So, Netflix viewers will have to wait and see if The Handmaid’s Tale becomes available to them, but if it does, they’ll be able to watch all six seasons of this gripping and powerful story about June Osborne’s journey from a victim of Gilead to a determined leader fighting for freedom.
What’s New on Netflix?
Even though The Handmaid’s Tale is no longer available, Netflix still offers a lot of excellent shows. This April, the platform added the first seasons of Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical from NBC, plus new seasons of its original series The Bad Guys: The Series and XO, Kitty.
