Director Darren Aronofsky tends to divide audiences – people usually have strong feelings one way or the other. He’s known for being intensely committed to his work, and his films – like Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and The Whale – are often disturbing and emotionally powerful. That’s why it’s surprising his latest film didn’t reach a wider audience in theaters. Luckily, it’s now streaming on Netflix, so you can judge for yourself if it has the potential to become a hidden gem.
The new film, Caught Stealing, starring Matt Smith, Austin Butler, and Zoe Kravitz, is a thrilling and intense adventure that feels like a throwback to 90s crime classics like Pulp Fiction. The story follows Hank Thompson (Butler), a former high school baseball star whose career ended after a devastating car accident. Now working as a bartender and in a relationship with Yyvone (Kravitz), Hank is trying to move on with his life. When his eccentric neighbor, Russ (Smith), asks him to cat-sit, Hank unwittingly gets pulled into a dangerous situation, pursued by violent gangsters with unknown motives. He’s quickly caught up in the chaos, left to figure out why he’s become a target.
Caught Stealing Is A Campy, Trippy, Good Time
The film definitely has the signature dark tone audiences expect from Darren Aronofsky, but it feels different this time. According to Philip Concannon of Sight & Sound, Aronofsky seems to be enjoying himself, and that energy carries over to the audience throughout the fast-paced 107 minutes. As critic Charlotte Simmons puts it, the movie is a classic American blockbuster – complete with a big star, some romance, action, and humor – that surprisingly explores how we can’t escape the truth and the complexities of life.
Caught Stealing is shaping up to be a modern cult classic. It’s a thrilling, violent, and wildly unpredictable ride that will keep you hooked. Director Aronofsky clearly drew inspiration from films like The Big Lebowski and incorporates familiar stylistic elements from his own work, especially Requiem for a Dream. If you’re looking for a dark and exciting film, it’s definitely worth watching.
