
A highly anticipated movie based on a popular book is coming out in just over a month, and romance readers have been eagerly waiting for over four years to see it on the big screen. Author Emily Henry has had several of her romantic comedies optioned for film or television, but her 2021 novel, The People We Meet on Vacation, will be the first to be released as a movie.

“The People We Meet on Vacation” is a story about Poppy and Alex, two best friends who live far apart but make it a tradition to take one summer trip together each year. The book jumps between the present day and memories of their past vacations, showing how their feelings for each other begin to evolve from friendship into something more.
Emily Bader, known for her role in Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, stars as the character Poppy, and Tom Blythe, who led The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, plays Alex. The film’s cast also features Sarah Catherine Hook, Lucien Laviscount, Miles Heizer, Jameela Jamil, Tommy Do, Lukas Gage, Alice Lee, Molly Shannon, and Alan Ruck.
Brett Haley, who directed Hearts Beat Loud, also directed The People We Meet on Vacation. The screenplay was written by Yulin Huang, Amos Vernon, and Nunzio Randazzo, and it’s based on the popular novel by Henry.
In the Netflix movie The People We Meet on Vacation, Poppy and Alex are best friends with very different personalities. They’ve maintained their close bond for ten years, despite living far apart, by taking a summer trip together each year. Their comfortable friendship is complicated when they start to wonder if they might be meant for more than just friendship – something everyone around them has suspected all along.
Emily Henry is a popular author with several of her books becoming movies and TV shows. Both Beach Read and Book Lovers are being adapted for the big screen, and she’s even writing the screenplay for her newest novel, Funny Story. Plus, Jennifer Lopez’s production company is developing Happy Place into a series for Netflix.
