Netflix Locks in Release Window For a Massive Upcoming Anime

The Winter 2026 anime season is shaping up to be fantastic! Fans have a lot to anticipate, with returning favorites like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 leading the way. While Crunchyroll has many of the new releases, Netflix is also offering a great selection, including unique titles like Love Through a Prism and Cosmic Princess Kaguya. And with it being only January, even more anime will be added to the platform as the year goes on.

Kyoto Animation, the studio behind popular anime like Violet Evergarden and A Silent Voice, is creating a new historical fantasy series called Sparks of Tomorrow. Known for its high-quality work since 1985, the studio recently announced its first adaptation from Shonen Jump with RuriDragon. Sparks of Tomorrow is confirmed to stream on Netflix starting in July 2026, and will be part of the Winter 2026 anime season. A specific release date will be announced later.

What Is Sparks of Tomorrow About?

This story takes place in an alternate early 1900s Kyoto, a city transformed by steam power into a place filled with smoke and grime. While the world looks forward to electricity, Kihachi Sakamoto is mourning his brother and questioning the future they once imagined together. At the same time, Inaoko Momonkawa, a deeply religious young woman, is struggling with immense grief and regret following the loss of her mother.

Following a chance meeting, two characters set out on a quest to uncover the mystery behind the 20th Century Electrical Catalog. Director Minaru Ota, known for his work on anime like A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, and Liz and the Blue Bird, recently discussed the new series on its official website. He revealed that each character has faced difficulties and overcome obstacles on their journey.

Currently, only the two main characters have been announced, but more details are coming soon. The anime recently confirmed that new information will be revealed at AnimeJapan this year, a popular annual anime event. Fans can look forward to a new trailer and the first reveal of the remaining main cast members. AnimeJapan 2026 will be held at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo on March 28th and 29th, and Sparks of Tomorrow will be featured alongside over 120 other exhibitors, including major companies like Aniplex Inc., KADOKAWA Corporation, TOHO animation, and Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc.
