Among the most unusual films released in 2024 has just been added to Netflix. In recent times, biographical movies have gained significant attention, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis, Rocketman, Back to Black, and others, which vividly portrayed the lives of prominent musical legends. However, some of these adaptations have taken unconventional artistic liberties in telling their stories. For instance, Robbie Williams’ Better Man featured Williams as an anthropomorphic chimpanzee. Yet, 2024 introduced what might be an even more peculiar portrayal.
As a movie connoisseur, I recently discovered that “Piece by Piece” – an extraordinary musical biopic unlike any other – has made its way onto Netflix’s June lineup. This unique film, narrating Pharrell Williams’ life journey, is presented entirely in LEGO form, a creative collaboration between Pharrell and The LEGO Group. Hitting theaters back in October 2024, “Piece by Piece” marks the sixth theatrical LEGO-based movie following “The LEGO Movie,” “The LEGO Batman Movie,” and others.
In this captivating production, we delve into Pharrell’s story, starting from his roots in Virginia Beach, forming The Neptunes alongside Chad Hugo, collaborating with artists such as Jay-Z, Gwen Stefani, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, and many more. The film takes us on a journey through the highs and lows of Pharrell’s career, culminating in his remarkable comeback with hits like “Get Lucky,” “Happy,” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” – all brought to life through the artistry of LEGO animation.
A movie centered around Pharrell Williams, known for hits like “Get Lucky” and “Happy”, had been under consideration since 2013. However, instead of the usual live-action biopic, both Williams and director Morgan Neville aimed to present an innovative, genre-bending narrative. The LEGO Group developed mini-figures that better reflected African-American culture, designed sets for musical equipment, and created figures similar to Williams’ frequent collaborators. Despite positive feedback, the movie titled “Piece by Piece” was a significant commercial flop.
Despite its production budget of merely $16 million, the film “Piece by Piece” flopped at the box office, earning just $10.7 million globally. Nonetheless, this LEGO-themed animation offers enjoyment and entertainment, along with some of Williams’ finest melodies, as well as five fresh songs composed exclusively for the movie. The film also boasts a talented voice cast featuring some prominent R&B artists from our era. It’s unfortunate that “Piece by Piece” didn’t see greater financial success, as it presents an innovative approach for musicians and celebrities to create biopics.
Indeed, numerous contemporary live-action biopics have captivated audiences with compelling and emotional narratives, executing their roles flawlessly. It’s refreshing, though, to witness more celebrities venturing into uncharted territories and showcasing innovation when sharing their life stories. The creative minds of Robbie Williams and Pharrell Williams might pave the way for a new standard in future biographical documentaries, potentially yielding some of the most intriguing, distinctive, and surprising films to come. Piece by Piece is now accessible for streaming on Netflix within the United States.
