Anyone who’s used Netflix for a while is familiar with the regular addition of new movies, usually at the beginning of each month, with a few more appearing throughout the rest of the month. Netflix typically announces these new releases in its newsletter and with previews on the platform itself. However, this week, a previously overlooked horror-thriller unexpectedly appeared and has surprised many viewers.
I stumbled onto a surprisingly tense thriller on Netflix recently – The Girl Who Got Away. It’s a 2021 indie film that originally came out four years ago, and it’s written and directed by Michael Morrissey. The story centers around a female serial killer who breaks free after years in custody, and a detective convinced she’s after one last victim who got away. It’s a solid find for horror fans, but honestly, the biggest surprise for me was seeing Chukwudi Iwuji – who you might recognize from recent blockbuster hits – in one of the lead roles. Definitely a bit of a left turn if you’re expecting superhero action!
Netflix’s New Hit Thriller Stars a Comic Book Favorite

The cast of The Girl Who Got Away features talented actors who aren’t necessarily household names. While Lexi Johnson has appeared in This Is Us and The Nice Guys, and Geoffrey Cantor was in Marvel’s Daredevil, none of the actors were as well-known as Chukwudi Iwuji before this film. Iwuji, a Nigerian actor, had roles in shows like Doctor Who and the movie John Wick: Chapter 2, but he’s now gaining major recognition for his work in both Marvel and DC projects.
Chukwudi Iwuji impressed audiences in the first season of Peacemaker playing a mercenary working for Amanda Waller—who was secretly controlled by an alien. It was a challenging role, requiring him to portray both a hardened character and the alien presence within. His performance was highly acclaimed and caught the attention of director James Gunn, who immediately wanted to work with him again. Gunn cast Iwuji as the main villain, The High Evolutionary, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Despite already being part of the DC Universe, Gunn has expressed a desire to collaborate with Iwuji again, and Iwuji himself has ideas for a future role in the franchise.
While actor Chinaza Iwuji might not be the main reason people are watching The Girl Who Got Away, the movie is quickly becoming a popular hit on Netflix. Currently, it’s the #2 movie in the United States and looks likely to stay there. The indie thriller didn’t get much attention when it was first released—it only has four official reviews on Rotten Tomatoes—but it’s gained a lot of viewers since becoming available on Netflix. As of today, The Girl Who Got Away has a 92% audience score, with fans enjoying its clever story, suspenseful moments, and Iwuji’s performance.
