Netflix regularly updates its movie and TV show selection, and November is proving to be no exception. Over the past week, several titles have been added and removed. Recently, the platform unexpectedly added a 2023 thriller starring a well-known actor from the DC Universe, though the movie didn’t receive much attention or positive reviews when it was first released.
The drama thriller Manodrome, directed by John Trengove, is now available to stream on Netflix. The platform added the film on November 8th without announcing it in their newsletter. Starring Jesse Eisenberg (known for playing Lex Luthor in DC films), the movie follows Ralphie, an unemployed man about to become a father, who gets involved with a dangerous group promoting harmful ideas about masculinity. The cast also includes Adrien Brody, Odessa Young, and Sallieu Sesay, among others. Manodrome had a limited release in theaters, earning just over $654,000.
Jesse Eisenberg Shines in Manodrome
Despite receiving very low scores – 49% from critics and 26% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – Manodrome features what many consider to be Jesse Eisenberg’s strongest performance to date. While viewers found the plot confusing and ultimately unsatisfying, both critics and audiences praised Eisenberg’s portrayal of Ralphie, a man struggling with hidden anger, as the film’s saving grace and a career highlight.
Critics have praised Jesse Eisenberg’s performance in Manodrome as his best work in over ten years. Many reviewers pointed out that he played a notably different character than his usual roles, stepping away from the anxious and awkward personalities he’s known for. The Austin Chronicle highlighted Eisenberg’s ability to create a compelling and heartbreaking portrayal of a deeply troubled man and the consequences of his actions. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Eisenberg successfully portrayed the vulnerable side of a character grappling with toxic masculinity, showing the damaged individuals beneath the surface.
Beyond Eisenberg’s powerful and captivating performance, Manodrome was praised for tackling relevant issues and director Trengove’s skill in creating a slow-burn, suspenseful story that really gets inside the main character’s head. Brody’s portrayal of Dan also stood out as a highlight.
What’s New on Netflix?
Netflix added a bunch of new movies in early November, including the thriller Manodrome. Joining it are popular titles like Baby Driver, all three Back to the Future films, Crazy Rich Asians, Don’t Worry Darling, The Hangover, and Ocean’s 8, which all became available on November 1st. More recent additions also include King Richard, Bride Wars, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
