Netflix added a lot of new movies in early January, but one of the best arrived a few days later as a surprise. Subscribers weren’t given any advance notice about this new movie, which wasn’t included in the previously announced January releases.
Netflix added the intriguing 2018 thriller Under the Silver Lake this Monday, and it’s a mystery movie fans might really enjoy. If you love films that are full of twists and turns and don’t offer easy answers, Under the Silver Lake is definitely worth checking out.
What Is Under the Silver Lake?
A24’s film Under the Silver Lake features Andrew Garfield and is directed by David Robert Mitchell, who previously made the acclaimed horror film It Follows. However, Under the Silver Lake is quite different from It Follows. It’s about a unique young man in Los Angeles (Garfield) who becomes fixated on finding a woman (Riley Keough) he briefly met. His search leads him on a bizarre, drug-fueled journey through the stranger sides of LA, and he soon discovers a larger conspiracy at play.
Like a modern take on The Big Lebowski, Under the Silver Lake is more about the journey than the destination. We watch the main character awkwardly navigate a criminal underworld he doesn’t belong in, and the film benefits from a great supporting cast featuring Topher Grace and Riki Lindhome.
If you haven’t watched Under the Silver Lake yet, and you enjoy mysteries or the work of director David Robert Mitchell, it’s a must-see. It didn’t get enough attention when it was released, but it’s a film that really holds up and deserves more recognition.
