Netflix Remaking Mystery Thriller Movie With 94% on Rotten Tomatoes Just 4 Years After It Was Released

Netflix is planning a remake of a very popular mystery-thriller film that originally came out just four years ago, in 2021. While the original was a French movie, Netflix’s version will be in English. This decision has sparked a familiar discussion about whether it’s better to remake foreign films and shows, or to offer them in their original language. Netflix is often at the heart of this conversation, as they’ve been leaders in bringing globally diverse content to audiences – shows like Squid Game and Money Heist are prime examples of their success.

The French film Black Box (originally titled Boîte noire) came out in France and Belgium on September 8, 2021, and proved to be popular, grossing about $9.7 million worldwide. Now, Netflix is creating an English-language remake. Tim Fehlbaum, known for directing September 5, will direct. Andrew Mittman of 1.21 (known for Elvis and Wednesday) will produce alongside the original film’s producers: Wassim Beji, Thibault Gast, and Matthias Weber. Kai Dolbashian from 1.21 will be the executive producer.

The movie centers on an investigator who examines the black box after a devastating plane crash. As he listens to the recordings, he discovers strange sounds that others dismiss. The more he analyzes the audio, the more inconsistencies he finds, leading him to question the initial belief that terrorism was to blame. This shift in perspective attracts unwanted attention from powerful people who want the truth to remain hidden. Soon, the investigator finds himself caught in a dangerous conspiracy that threatens his life as he races to uncover what really happened.

Black Box is the kind of stripped-down mystery-thriller that will actually play well for Netflix.
