Netflix Reveals the Best Look Yet at Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s Monster (And It’s Not What You Expect)

The marketing for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has been building anticipation by showing only parts of the monster, a common tactic to keep audiences intrigued and save the full reveal for the movie itself. So far, glimpses of the Creature have kept its face hidden, letting viewers imagine what it looks like. That’s why it’s surprising that Netflix just released a new trailer showing the Creature in full, and the design might be different than what fans were expecting.

Netflix just released a new preview showing Jacob Elordi as The Creature. Unlike the traditional image of Frankenstein’s monster, Elordi’s character has pale skin and closely resembles the Engineers from the movie Prometheus. You can watch the trailer below.

Guillermo del Toro Put His Own Spin on Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro had wanted to make a film adaptation of Frankenstein for a long time, and Netflix finally gave him the chance. While the movie stays mostly true to Mary Shelley’s original novel, it does include some changes, as is common with adaptations. Critics generally agree that these changes actually improved the story. As a result, Frankenstein has received positive reviews and is considered a strong contender for Oscar nominations this year – it might even be Netflix’s biggest hope for a Best Picture win. This success isn’t surprising, considering del Toro’s talent and how well his artistic style suited the material.

One of the smartest choices in this new take on Frankenstein was definitely the redesign of the Creature. Jacob Elordi delivers a truly remarkable performance; he really gets at the heart of the character’s sadness and pain. Guillermo del Toro intentionally steered clear of the typical horror tropes. He’s said this film is really about the complex relationship between a father and son, and that’s exactly what we see play out. While the Creature still looks different, there’s a clear effort to make him sympathetic and relatable, which is classic del Toro. He’s always been fascinated by the humanity within monsters, and that’s clearly what drew him to this story in the first place.

With digital characters appearing more and more in big movies, fans will likely appreciate that Elordi wore a lot of prosthetics and makeup. Even though CGI has become incredibly realistic, there’s still a special quality to practical effects like makeup. That’s why James Gunn chose makeup to transform Anthony Carrigan into Metamorpho in Superman – it makes things feel more real. And judging by the positive response to Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro made the right choice going this route as well.

It remains to be seen if Jacob Elordi will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor, as that category is always highly competitive. However, if the film Frankenstein gains significant traction, Elordi could be a strong contender. He delivers a deeply emotional performance that truly anchors the film and connects with audiences. Guillermo del Toro’s masterful direction and the film’s technical achievements likely will earn nominations in categories like makeup and hairstyling, but it would be fantastic if Elordi also received recognition for his contribution.
