Netflix ‘Scooby-Doo’ Series Casts Frank Welker as the Voice of Scooby

The upcoming live-action series promises a fresh interpretation of the beloved animated character. However, according to Nexus Point News, one thing will remain the same: the original voice actor for the famously timid Great Dane will return.

A new installment of the series was announced earlier this year, and Josh Applebaum and Scott Rosenberg will be leading the creative team. Casting is currently happening, with actors for the main teenage characters being prioritized, and production is scheduled to start in April 2026. A recent report also reveals that the voice actor for Scooby-Doo has already been chosen.

Frank Welker has voiced countless beloved cartoon characters over the years, shaping the childhoods of many. He first began working with the Scooby-Doo franchise in 1969, voicing Fred Jones, and has been the voice of Scooby-Doo himself since 2002. Though the new version of the series hasn’t been revealed yet, it appears Scooby will sound just as he has for the past twenty years. The series is described as a darker take on the classic Scooby-Doo stories.

This is a fresh take on the classic mystery-solving team and their amazing dog. As Shaggy and Daphne enjoy their last summer at camp, they stumble into a spooky mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy who may have seen something terrible happen. They team up with Velma, a logical and scientific local, and Freddy, a new and intriguing student, to investigate. As they dig deeper, the case turns into a frightening nightmare that could reveal hidden truths about each of them.

Some voice actors become legendary for bringing classic cartoon characters to life. Like the incredibly talented Mel Blanc, Frank Welker has voiced many of the heroes and villains that people remember fondly from their childhoods.

Throughout his long career, and in addition to his work on Scooby-Doo, he’s lent his voice to a huge range of beloved characters. These include Spike from The Tom and Jerry Show, Doctor Claw from Inspector Gadget, Ray and Slimer from The Real Ghostbusters, several Smurfs, multiple characters on Muppet Babies, Santa’s Little Helper from The Simpsons, and roles in Animaniacs and Tiny Toons, among many others.

He’s a prolific voice actor known for a huge range of characters in popular films. He created the distinctive sounds of the Martians in Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks, voiced Abu, Rajah, and the Cave of Wonders in Disney’s Aladdin, and even provided Spock’s screams in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Puss’s meows in Shrek 2. He’s also a key part of the Transformers franchise, famously voicing Megatron alongside Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, in both the animated series and the live-action movies, as well as many other roles.

With Welker joining the Scooby-Doo series, which is expected to stream on Netflix around 2027, his skills will reach a wider audience. If the casting news is true—and everything suggests it is—fans have a lot to look forward to in the new show.
