Streaming service Netflix has emerged as a favorite among anime enthusiasts due to its extensive collection of anime content. It airs well-known shows such as “Demon Slayer”, “Jujutsu Kaisen”, the latest installments of “One Piece” and “Spy x Family”, along with original and exclusive anime titles like “The Summer Hikaru Died” and “Sakamoto Days”. Notably, Netflix is also making a significant move by being the new platform for one of the most contentious anime productions of the past decade. Controversies surrounding anime can arise for various reasons, but this once-popular series has stirred up some particularly intense debates.
Per What’s On Netflix, the streamer will release the second season of the Rurouni Kenshin remake this October. The remake of Rurouni Kenshin first began airing in 2023, and Netflix picked up the series for streaming in February of this year. Up until this October, the streamer has only held the first season of the 2023 reboot. However, Netflix is continuing to support the controversial anime by adding Season 2 to its streaming library next month.
Why Is Rurouni Kenshin So Controversial?

Anime like Mushoku Tensei and One Piece have sparked debates due to their content, while Rurouni Kenshin’s controversy originates from its creator, Nobuhiro Watsuki. The original and remade anime versions are adaptations of the manga by him. In 2017, police in Tokyo conducted a raid on Watsuki’s residence, where they discovered explicit and obscene images of underage girls during the search.
The issues don’t end there, unfortunately. Many people believe that such criminal charges should significantly impact a person’s career, as is rightfully expected. However, after paying a fine of approximately $1,900, Watsuki resumed his work on the Shonen Jump series in 2018. The light punishment for this serious crime has raised eyebrows, and Shuiesha’s decision to allow Watsuki to continue publishing and being compensated for Rurouni Kenshin has been widely criticized as unjustifiable by numerous fans.
Since the surfacing of controversies surrounding Nobuhiro Watsuki, the adaptations of Rurouni Kenshin have been overshadowed, and that’s particularly true for the 2023 reboot which started production post-scandal. It’s a real pity because Rurouni Kenshin was an all-time favorite for numerous manga/anime enthusiasts, including those who came of age with the 1996 anime series. Regrettably, Watsuki’s besmirched reputation has also cast a shadow over the entire franchise’s esteem.
