A popular movie from the 1990s, known for causing a stir when it won an Oscar nearly 30 years ago, is getting a lot of attention on Netflix. While Netflix adds new shows and movies every month, this older film has recently become a hit with viewers as its time on the streaming service is coming to an end.
Everyone remembers the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love. Its unexpected win for Best Picture at the Academy Awards – beating the heavily favored Saving Private Ryan – is still considered a major upset. Thanks to a very ambitious marketing campaign by Miramax, this romantic comedy about a fictional love affair between William Shakespeare and Viola de Lesseps has remained popular. Recently, it even reappeared in the top 10 on Netflix. However, fans should know that Shakespeare in Love will be leaving the streaming platform on February 20th.
Shakespeare in Love Swept the Oscars and Viewers’ Hearts
I remember being so excited when Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture in 1999, but it wasn’t just that! The movie was a huge success at the Oscars, earning a total of 13 nominations – that’s incredible! It ended up winning seven awards, including ones for Gwyneth Paltrow as Best Actress and Judi Dench as Best Supporting Actress, and even Best Director. Critics really loved it – it’s still ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% rating! It also picked up a bunch of Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and British Academy Film Awards, making it a truly award-winning film.
I absolutely adore Shakespeare in Love! It wasn’t just critics who loved it – the way the movie playfully reimagines the making of Romeo and Juliet totally captured everyone’s hearts. It really is the perfect ’90s romantic historical comedy-drama, and honestly, if you’re into the vibe of shows like Bridgerton with all the beautiful costumes and settings, you have to watch it. It’s got everything – gorgeous visuals, a really passionate love story, and some seriously clever dialogue. People often say it’s a lighter, more fun option than other period dramas, and I think that’s spot on. It feels like a love letter to the theater itself, showing the real people and emotions behind the art. It’s just so juicy, passionate, funny, and vibrant – it still feels fresh and amazing even today!
Where to Stream Shakespeare in Love After It Leaves Netflix?
If you enjoy Shakespeare in Love, you’ll still be able to watch it even after it’s removed from Netflix on February 20th. It’s also available for streaming on Peacock and has been added to Paramount+ as of February 1st.
