War has been a popular subject in movies almost since the beginning of film, with one of the earliest examples being a short film from 1898. Over the past century, war movies have changed a lot. They’ve moved from simple stories of heroism and national pride to more complicated looks at the difficult moral questions and emotional scars of war, resulting in classics like Saving Private Ryan and Platoon. Currently, one of the very best war films is available to stream on Netflix, but viewers don’t have much time left to watch it.

When discussing great war movies, Braveheart always comes up. Released in 1995, Mel Gibson’s historical drama about Scottish hero William Wallace and Scotland’s fight for independence is still considered one of the best in the genre. Fans will be disappointed to learn it’s leaving Netflix on March 1st. Gibson directed, produced, and starred in the film, which tells the story of Wallace uniting Scotland against the oppressive King Edward I of England, fueled by a personal tragedy – the violent loss of his beloved.
