Christian Bale is known for huge hits like The Dark Knight trilogy, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Terminator: Salvation, but not every movie he’s in is a success. One film, a 2017 Western drama, didn’t do well in theaters. It was his second time working with director Scott Cooper, following their collaboration on Out of the Furnace. Now considered one of Bale’s most underrated movies, it’s quickly leaving Netflix, so viewers have limited time to watch it.
The Western film Hostiles stars Christian Bale as Captain Joseph Blocker, an army officer tasked with a dangerous mission in 1892: returning a Native American war chief and his family to Montana. Despite a budget of $40 to $50 million, the movie didn’t do well in theaters, earning only $35.7 million. While it recently gained popularity as a surprise addition to Netflix, Hostiles will be leaving the streaming service on November 20th.
Hostiles Is Christian Bale’s Most Overlooked Movie, but That Needs to Change
It’s understandable why Hostiles hasn’t gotten much attention – it didn’t have a big marketing push, it wasn’t widely released, and Christian Bale has starred in many more popular films. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. Hostiles is a surprisingly deep and moving Western that deserves to be seen by a wider audience; it’s truly underrated.
This visually stunning film offers a raw and honest portrayal of violence and the challenging process of healing. It avoids simple stories of heroes and villains, instead exploring the complicated realities of human behavior. Driven by compelling characters and powerful performances – particularly from Bale as a tired captain and Pike as a grieving widow – the film delivers a deeply emotional and impactful experience for the audience.
Despite its dark and violent story, Hostiles is a visually stunning film with a moving score by Max Richter. Interestingly, it received positive reviews from both critics and audiences – earning a ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with scores of 71% from critics and 77% from viewers – even though it didn’t perform well at the box office.
Where to Stream Hostiles After It Leaves Netflix?
Good news for Christian Bale and Western fans: you’ll still be able to watch Hostiles after it leaves Netflix on November 20th! It’s also available on other streaming services like Prime Video, Tubi, the Roku Channel, and Plex, as well as for rental or purchase on demand.
With Hostiles being removed from Netflix shortly, there are still lots of other good movies to watch. This month, popular titles like Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8, and all three Back to the Future movies were added.
