It seems popularity on Netflix doesn’t always equal quality. It’s surprising, isn’t it? While this is a topic for another discussion, it highlights that having well-known actors, creators, and directors involved doesn’t guarantee a good final product. Consider other Netflix series like The I-Land, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and Blockbuster as examples.
Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story, the latest in his Monster series, unfortunately falls into the category of Netflix originals that didn’t quite deliver on their promise. Even with Charlie Hunnam in the lead role, the show didn’t resonate with viewers-some even believe casting him was a misstep.
What Went Wrong With Monster?
There’s been a lot of reaction, and viewers who were anticipating a show potentially connected to Mindhunter are making their disappointment known. The main issue so far? How much the show deviates from the truth – even considering the already disturbing reality of the case. Ryan Murphy didn’t really need to embellish – Ed Gein’s actual life was frightening enough. However, he chose to alter even the most well-known (and easily verifiable) details of Gein’s life, seemingly to make them even more shocking. It’s widely understood that Murphy isn’t overly concerned with historical accuracy in his adaptations, but this felt like a particularly poor decision given that Gein is such a famous and well-documented serial killer. One Reddit user perfectly captured the feeling: “It’s basically AHS but with Gein included.” Another user commented, “I could accept some inaccuracies for entertainment purposes, but it was so excessive that I couldn’t even enjoy or finish watching it. What’s the point of making a true crime-inspired show if you’re going to fabricate 60% of the events?”
It’s frustrating to watch a show that requires constant fact-checking to separate fiction from reality, especially when it’s presented as a biography. We’re left questioning the purpose of the series. This is particularly true considering that the creator, Murphy, chose to blatantly lie about some of the victims, falsely suggesting romantic relationships with Gein-a deeply inappropriate decision that doesn’t enhance the story and robs the victims of their dignity and agency.
