2025 was a record-breaking year for anime films. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle became the highest-grossing anime movie ever, earning a massive amount of money in theaters. Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc also performed well, though it didn’t reach the same heights. Both films are expected to be available on Crunchyroll eventually, but Netflix remains a key player in anime streaming. Recently, Netflix announced it will be the exclusive streaming home for one of 2025’s biggest anime hits – a film that doesn’t involve battles against demons.
Even though 100 Meters doesn’t involve any supernatural powers, it’s become one of the most praised anime films of 2025. Originally released in Japan this past September, the movie is adapted from a manga published by Kodansha and centers on Togashi, a determined athlete striving for success in the competitive world of track and field. 100 Meters arrives on Netflix this month, December 31st, and Netflix describes it as: “A lifetime of training, and only 100 meters to make it count. From the creator of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth comes a story of passion, madness, and the pursuit of victory. 100 METERS will stream exclusively on Netflix from December 31!”

Though 100 Meters had a brief run in North American theaters last October, many anime fans likely missed seeing it on the big screen. The film has earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes – a rare achievement for any movie. GKIDS, the distributor, describes the film as being based on a popular manga series that ran from 2018 to 2019.
“100 Meters” tells the story of Togashi, a naturally talented runner who seems destined for success. From a young age, he easily wins every 100-meter dash. However, everything changes when he meets Komiya, a new student who is determined but lacks the skills to compete. Togashi begins teaching Komiya, giving him a strong drive to win at all costs. The story follows their journey as they eventually reunite as rivals, revealing who they truly are.
Sports anime has become increasingly popular, with shows like Slam Dunk, Haikyu!!, and Blue Lock gaining a large international following. Although these stories are often realistic, the exciting anime-style action helps attract new viewers. While 100 Meters didn’t achieve the same level of financial success as hits like Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer this year, it’s still considered a classic anime.
