Netflix has won the bid to buy Warner Bros. from Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal includes the film and TV studios, as well as streaming services HBO Max and HBO. However, Paramount is trying to make a competing offer.
Netflix stated the deal will be finalized once Discovery Warner Bros. Discovery completes the planned spin-off of its Global Networks division into a separate, publicly traded company. This separation is anticipated to happen in the third quarter of 2026.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated the company’s goal is simply to entertain people globally. By adding Warner Bros.’ extensive collection of content – including iconic films like Casablanca and Citizen Kane, and popular series like Harry Potter and Friends – to Netflix’s own hits such as Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters, and Squid Game, they believe they can achieve this even more effectively. Sarandos believes this combination will allow them to offer viewers more of what they enjoy and shape the future of storytelling.
According to Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters, this deal will significantly enhance what we offer and fuel our growth for many years. Warner Bros. has been a cornerstone of the entertainment industry for over a century, and continues to produce incredible content thanks to its talented team. By leveraging our global platform and successful business approach, we can bring their stories to more people, giving our subscribers more choices, drawing in new fans to our leading streaming service, and ultimately benefiting both the entertainment industry and our investors.
Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix are joining forces to deliver even more of the entertainment people love, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. He stated that Warner Bros. has been captivating audiences and influencing culture for over a century, and this partnership will ensure those beloved stories continue to reach viewers worldwide for many years to come.
