Netflix is currently working on a three-part science fiction story, and unlike some of their other shows, it looks likely that this one will actually be completed. Netflix has a reputation for canceling shows abruptly, leaving viewers without a proper ending, so this is a welcome change.
Netflix used to quickly cancel shows, but recently, series like The Night Agent, Outer Banks, and Wednesday have been allowed to run longer than earlier shows like Shadow & Bone, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and The OA. Even when you’re enjoying a show on Netflix now, there’s still a worry that it might be canceled before it gets a satisfying conclusion.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m really excited about 3 Body Problem. It’s based on the incredible Chinese novel series, Remembrance of Earth’s Past – the first book is also called The Three-Body Problem. The story kicks off with Ye Wenjie, a Chinese astrophysicist played by Rosalind Chao and Zine Tseng, who ends up at a top-secret military base and makes a choice that changes everything for humanity.
Years after the initial events, a group of friends nicknamed the “Oxford Five” begin looking into a string of suicides and strange occurrences in London, all of which appear connected to a decision made by Wenjie. The story is complex and far-reaching, and the Netflix series doesn’t shy away from that. From the very beginning, the show’s creators – David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo – fully immerse viewers in both the scientific and mysterious aspects of the plot.
The first season has a lot of intricate details and mysteries that might require you to watch scenes again. While all this complexity could be confusing, the fact that Netflix has already ordered seasons two and three – and that each season will cover one book – means we will get a resolution to the story.
Netflix’s 3 Body Problem Is Avoiding A 3 Season Problem
Many complex science fiction TV shows can be difficult to get into. Unlike comedies, where you can enjoy almost any episode, sci-fi – especially when it focuses on scientific details – usually requires watching from the start and carefully following the story to understand what’s happening.
It’s frustrating to invest time in a show that fizzles out without a proper conclusion. Given Netflix’s history, you might hesitate to begin a new series. But you can confidently start 3 Body Problem – we now know it will have a complete ending.
There’s A Caveat To 3 Body Problem’s Early Renewal
While 3 Body Problem is confirmed to have a conclusion, future seasons will be shorter than the first. Season 2 will have six episodes, and Season 3 will have just five, according to Forbes.
| Rememberance of Earth’s Past Book vs. Show | ||
|---|---|---|
| Title | Pages | Episodes |
| The Three-Body Problem | 400 | 8 |
| The Dark Forest | 510 | 6 |
| Death’s End | 600 | 5 |
This is concerning because the remaining books in the series, The Dark Forest and Death’s End, are significantly longer than the first season. Considering Benioff and Weiss previously shortened the final seasons of Game of Thrones and struggled to wrap up the story, this could create challenges. However, Netflix and the creators might have a clear vision for 3 Body Problem, and we should appreciate getting a complete science fiction series.
