Netflix’s 6-Part Thriller Series Is One Of Its Best

Netflix has many thrilling shows to choose from, including originals like The Diplomat and The Night Agent, as well as acquired series like Dark Winds. But one of their most popular and highly-rated thrillers is the six-episode series Bodyguard, starring Richard Madden, best known for his role in Game of Thrones.

Although Netflix has many excellent thrillers, Bodyguard from 2018 is a standout. It was hugely popular, particularly in the UK when it originally aired, but it’s easy to have missed. Fortunately, with just six one-hour episodes, it’s a perfect show to watch all at once on Netflix.

Bodyguard Is A 6-Episode Spy Thriller

The six-part thriller Bodyguard centers on David Budd, a war veteran turned police officer. After he successfully prevents a bombing on a train by talking down the attackers, Budd becomes a national hero in Britain. This leads to his assignment as the security detail for Julia Montague, the Home Secretary, despite their strong political differences.

That’s all just the beginning of the story in Bodyguard, and it’s all established in the first episode. Without giving away too much, the series is packed with political schemes driven by Julia Montague, attempts on her life, the constant threat of terrorism, and personal struggles for both her and her bodyguard, David Budd, who is dealing with PTSD. Despite being only six episodes long, Bodyguard is a fast-paced thriller full of unexpected twists and turns.

Richard Madden Is Great In Bodyguard

Richard Madden is a major draw for the show Bodyguard. While already well-known from his role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, many consider his performance in Bodyguard to be his best work yet. He’s ideal for the role of David Budd, brilliantly portraying both the strength of an action hero and the emotional vulnerability of a war veteran trying to cope with his past and protect his family.

I was completely blown away by Richard Madden in Bodyguard! He was so convincing as a capable action hero, people were seriously talking about him as the next James Bond. I really think that role helped him land the lead in Citadel. Honestly, he’s just magnetic in those kinds of parts. Plus, the chemistry he had with both Sophie Rundle and Keeley Hawes was amazing – it’s easily one of his best performances, in my opinion.

Why Bodyguard Never Got A Second Season

Even though Richard Madden delivered a fantastic performance, the show featured a talented cast, and the storyline was truly captivating, Bodyguard never got a second season. In 2019, Madden explained (according to the Daily Mail) that there wasn’t an original plan for another season, but the show’s creators were thinking about it because so many people enjoyed the first one. Now, eight years after the finale, a second season still hasn’t materialized.

As a huge fan of Bodyguard, I’ve been wondering for ages why we haven’t gotten a second season! It seems like the biggest hurdle is Richard Madden’s schedule. Since the first season ended in 2018, he’s been super busy with movies like Eternals and a big new show called Citadel (which is getting another season soon!). Honestly, it sounds like he just doesn’t have the time to film another intense series like Bodyguard right now, and I get it – he’s in demand!

Look, let’s be real – after eight years, a second season of Bodyguard is probably not going to happen. The hype from 2018 has definitely died down, and Richard Madden is clearly focused on other projects now. But honestly? The show already works brilliantly as a standalone, complete story. It feels like a nearly perfect limited series as is, and I’m okay with leaving it at that.
