The popular video game series Assassin’s Creed has expanded into comics, board games, toys, and collectibles. While previous efforts to adapt it into a movie or TV show haven’t succeeded, Netflix is now trying with a new live-action series, and they’ve just announced the first actor cast in the show.
According to Deadline, Toby Wallace—known for his roles in Euphoria and Bikeriders—is the first actor cast in the upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series. He’s expected to play one of the show’s main characters, though details about who he’ll portray haven’t been released yet.
Production for the series is slated to begin in Italy in 2026, which likely means that’s where it will be filmed, though this hasn’t been officially stated. We also don’t yet know when the series will be set, or if it will feature Ezio Auditore, a fan-favorite character from the franchise.
Adapting Ezio’s story for a live-action series would be a great way to attract dedicated fans, but it would also create a lot of pressure to do it well. While the games feature many popular Assassins, Ezio remains one of the most beloved and iconic.
Roberto Patino and David Wiener will be the show runners and executive producers of the new series, joined by Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, Genevieve Jones, and Matt O’Toole. Actor Wallace has also appeared in several other projects, including the films Bikeriders, Eden, Inside, and Last Days, as well as the FX series Euphoria and Pistol.
This is the newest effort to successfully adapt the popular video game franchise into a movie, and hopefully it will be more successful than the last one. The 2016 Assassin’s Creed film, which starred Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons, wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences.
Despite costing $125 million to make and earning over $240 million globally, the Assassin’s Creed movie didn’t get a sequel. However, the Assassin’s Creed video game series remains incredibly popular. The latest game, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, is set in feudal Japan and tells the story of a Samurai and a Shinobi.
There’s currently no release date for the Assassin’s Creed live-action series.
