While Netflix has seen success with recent limited series and documentaries, one show that quietly stands out is a few-years-old ongoing series. It’s arguably their best new original, and thankfully, it’s been renewed for another season.
As a huge fan, I’ve been completely hooked by A Man on the Inside these last couple of seasons. Mike Schur and Ted Danson have created something really special – it’s funny, the characters feel so real, and it’s all wrapped up in a great mystery. So I was thrilled to hear Netflix is giving it a third season! Honestly, it’s totally deserved.
A Man on the Inside Is Netflix’s Best and Most Underrated New Series

Even with the involvement of well-known actors like Schur and Danson, the show A Man on the Inside hasn’t gotten a lot of mainstream attention. Luckily, critics and viewers have praised it, and Netflix clearly noticed – they quickly renewed it for another season after the second season aired last year.
The first season of A Man on the Inside received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 96% rating from critics and a 90% audience score. The second season was also well-received by critics with a 92% rating, though viewers rated it a bit lower at 68%. Despite the slight dip in audience approval, the season continued to highlight Ted Danson’s strong performance and concluded with a touching and well-executed finale, mirroring the quality of the first season.
As a total film and TV buff, I’ve really been enjoying this show. It manages to blend a playful spy vibe with stuff we can all relate to, and the witty dialogue and humor are consistently great. What I especially appreciate is that beneath the lightheartedness, there’s a surprisingly touching story, particularly in the first season. It really delves into Charles’ journey as he adjusts to retirement and, more importantly, deals with the grief of losing his wife – it’s handled with a lot of heart.
Charles grows throughout the series by learning from the people he interacts with – his daughter, his work partner, and even those he investigates. He discovers how to navigate his new life and finds genuine fulfillment in facing challenges and improving the lives of others, which is a key reason the show remains so appealing.
Season 3 will continue the story from where season 2 left off, picking up after Charles’s relationship with his music teacher, Mona (played by Mary Steenburgen, who is also Danson’s wife). Although they separated amicably, Charles’s choices at the end of last season will shape the beginning of the new season. Given how good the show has been, fans are eagerly awaiting season 3.
Seasons 1 and 2 of A Man on the Inside are now streaming on Netflix.
