Netflix’s Biggest Action Franchise Gets Major Spinoff Update With Title & First Look Image

I’ve been really impressed with the action movies Netflix has been putting out lately – they don’t hold back on spending and always get huge stars! They’ve had some big hits like The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, and Red Notice starring Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, both of which millions of people watched. But surprisingly, neither of those got a follow-up. It seems like Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction is where Netflix has really found a winning formula. I’ve watched both Extraction movies – they’ve racked up over 200 million views together – and I’m excited to hear they’re making more! He plays Tyler Rake, a super skilled mercenary who specializes in dangerous rescue missions, and it’s just a really thrilling series.

Netflix is developing a spin-off series based on the film Extraction, starring Omar Sy (Lupin, Jurassic World). Created and written by Glen Mazzara, who previously ran The Walking Dead, the new show will center on Sy’s character – another mercenary – as he attempts a risky hostage rescue in Libya. He’ll face dangerous criminals and grapple with his own difficult history. Netflix has shared the first look at Sy on set, which you can find below.

The show will be called Mercenary: An Extraction Series. Louise Hooper, known for her work on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Sandman, and Tim Southam, who has worked on Foundation and One Piece, will each direct four episodes of the eight-episode series.

Netflix Has Big Plans For The Extraction Franchise

Netflix’s upcoming series, Mercenary, is shaping up to be a big success. The show boasts a strong cast featuring Sy, alongside Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, Ed Speleers, and Sacha Dhawa. Produced by AGBO – the company behind the Extraction films – Mercenary aims to deliver similar high-octane action, especially the impressive long-take sequences that Extraction is famous for. However, the series promises to offer even more than just thrilling action.

Netflix is expanding its action universe with not one, but two new projects! In addition to the previously announced Mercenary, a spinoff of Extraction titled TYGO is in the works. This new film will take the high-octane action to South Korea, focusing on a mercenary who was once a child soldier. The cast includes stars like Don Lee (known from Train to Busan and Eternals), Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game), and BLACKPINK’s Lisa (The White Lotus). Lee Sang-yong will direct the movie, based on a screenplay by Cha Woo-jin.

In addition to the new spinoffs, a third Extraction movie is planned, bringing back Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake and director Sam Hargrave. Filming is anticipated to start in 2026, with the movie likely to be released in 2027 – around the same time as the Mercenary spinoff. While it’s unclear if these films will connect directly to the spinoffs, the franchise seems poised for further expansion if it continues to perform well, and Netflix is clearly invested in its future.

The first two Extraction movies are available to stream on Netflix.
