2026 started strong with the release of Cosmic Princess Kaguya on Netflix, which quickly became a global sensation, reaching over a million views in just three days. The film has been widely praised for its beautiful animation, compelling story, and unique science fiction elements. Due to its success, the movie had a special one-week theatrical run beginning February 20th, 2026, which was later extended. Support from famous manga artists like Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), and Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man)—who created new illustrations for the film—further boosted its popularity. Special screenings, including cheer events and talk shows, were also held. Currently, these screenings are limited to theaters in Japan, and there’s no news yet about a U.S. release. Crunchyroll reports that the film has been a top 10 hit for eight weeks straight, surpassing two billion yen in sales after selling over a million tickets.
What Is Cosmic Princess Kaguya About?
This new supernatural film offers a fresh take on the classic Japanese story, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. It marks the first feature film directed by Shingo Yamashita, who is well-known for directing the opening animations for hit anime series like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Chainsaw Man. The film follows two girls who connect through music while performing in Tsukuyomi, a virtual world built on dreams and aspirations. We meet Iroha Sakayori, a 17-year-old Tokyo high schooler who balances school with a part-time job.
She finds solace in watching Yachiyo Runami, a well-known online streamer who also manages Tsukuyomi. One day, she discovers a surprisingly glowing telephone pole, and to her astonishment, a baby appears! Unable to leave the child, she brings her home, only to watch her quickly grow into a girl the same age as herself. Even stranger, this girl turns out to be Princess Kaguya, but she’s developed a rather spoiled and self-centered personality.
I watched as these two characters started making music together, and it was beautiful. Little did they know, something dangerous was lurking, intent on snatching the princess away and returning her to the moon. After the movie came out, a manga adaptation was released on Comic Walker, a Japanese website. Unfortunately, there’s been no word yet on whether it will be available in English outside of Japan.
