A new true-crime series is quickly becoming popular on Netflix. This isn’t surprising, as Netflix has become known for its excellent true-crime content over the past ten years. From shocking cases like American Murder, The Tinder Swindler, and Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, to well-known documentaries about the Menendez Brothers, Amanda Knox, Making a Murderer, and Sean Combs, the platform offers a wide range of options for true-crime enthusiasts. The newest hit series, like many others, explores the connection between social media and murder, and it’s already proving to be a big success.
Netflix’s new true-crime documentary, “The TikTok Killer,” quickly became one of the platform’s most popular shows. According to FlixPatrol, it immediately climbed into the top 3, surpassed only by “The Dinosaurs” and “Bridgerton,” which have both been streaming for nearly three months.
What to Expect from The TikTok Killer

True-crime documentaries have repeatedly shown how harmful social media can be. We’ve seen intense stories about ‘catfishing,’ where people create fake online identities, and the damage it causes. For example, The Tinder Swindler featured a man who conned women out of millions through the dating app. Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing focused on a mother exploiting her children for financial gain, and Scamanda told the story of a woman who falsely claimed to have cancer to solicit money online.
The documentary series, The TikTok Murders, focuses on a tragic disappearance and its connection to the social media platform TikTok. In 2023, 42-year-old Ester Estepa vanished in Spain, prompting her family to search for answers. When Ester’s mother shared evidence with someone on TikTok, it ultimately led to the discovery of Ester’s body in a remote part of Spain in 2024. The series details this investigation and the events surrounding her death.
Many documentaries focus on the negative impacts of social media, but this one cleverly uses it as a source of evidence. TikTok proved crucial in piecing together the victim’s final hours, eventually leading investigators to travel blogger José Jurado Montilla, who filmed his adventures across Spain. Like many true-crime series today, the case remains open as the trial continues, but at its heart, this is a story about a tragic loss and the determined search for answers.
It remains to be seen if The TikTok Killer will become as well-known as other true-crime documentaries on Netflix, but its immediate popularity highlights our continued fascination with these disturbing real stories. Though often heartbreaking, these documentaries can offer a sense of resolution for families and friends of the victims, and it’s this discovery of what happened to their loved ones that seems to draw so many viewers to Netflix.
