HUNTR/X successfully fought through many challenges – including demogorgons, surprisingly skilled golfers, and students from Nevermore Academy – in their journey to defeat the Demon King Gwi-Ma. The show quickly became a hit on Netflix after its release last June, becoming the platform’s most popular offering in the second half of 2025.
The fantasy musical movie was a huge hit, racking up 482 million views on the streaming service between July and December 2025. This made it Netflix’s most-watched title in a six-month period, breaking the previous record.
Viewers spent 802.6 million hours watching content, and KPop Demon Hunters surprisingly outperformed popular Netflix films like Happy Gilmore 2 and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. It even surpassed some of the platform’s most popular series, racking up hundreds of millions more views.
As a big fan of both shows, it’s interesting to look at the numbers. While Wednesday had a fantastic run and was Netflix’s most-watched show for a while in the latter half of the year, it racked up just over 123.9 million views. But when you look at Stranger Things as a whole – all five seasons combined – it still pulled in a massive 275 million views during the same period. It just shows how much staying power that show has!
The film KPop Demon Hunters, about a KPop group protecting their fans from dark forces while battling the evil Saja Boys, has been a huge hit with both audiences and critics. It earned a 92% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even higher 99% rating from viewers, proving its widespread appeal. The film was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
Not only did film lovers enjoy KPop Demon Hunters, but it also resonated with music fans. Its soundtrack achieved double platinum status in October and made history by having four songs simultaneously reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The hit song “Golden” topped the Billboard Global 200 chart and achieved number one status in multiple countries. Performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, it has already received a Critics’ Choice Award and is nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year.
KPop Demon Hunters Could Make Oscars History
The Grammys aren’t the only awards celebrating talent this spring. On Thursday, KPop Demon Hunters received an Academy Award nomination for “Golden.” Following the announcement, Kang went to Instagram to offer support to her team and congratulate the other nominees.
The director excitedly announced the Oscar nominations, congratulating all those involved, including the KPDH crew! The nominees for Best Animated Feature are a strong group, featuring films like Zootopia 2 and Arco. “We’re going to the Oscars!” they wrote.
The popular fantasy musical has already been a success at the Academy Awards. In the Oscars’ 98-year history, very few anime films have been recognized, and KPop Demon Hunters is the first to receive multiple nominations in a single year. A win would solidify its place as one of the most beloved anime films ever made.
KPop Demon Hunters is currently available to stream on Netflix.
