Discussions about turning the video game “Gears of War” into a film have been ongoing since as early as 2007, when New Line Cinema acquired the film rights for the game. At that time, Len Wiseman was set to direct, with hopes of releasing the movie in cinemas by 2010. However, these plans didn’t materialize, and news about the project went quiet until 2013, when a new venture within the “Gears of War” universe was confirmed following the release of the fourth game. This too failed to come to fruition until 2022, when talks with Netflix emerged. In 2023, it was announced that Jon Spaihts had written a script for the project. More recently, earlier this year, David Leitch was confirmed as the director.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, directors Michael Leitch and his partner Kelly McCormick shed light on the progress of the Gears of War movie. They offered both exciting and somewhat disappointing updates regarding its release date.
currentlly, we’re collaborating with Jon Spaihts, and we’re thrilled about the project. The Coalition, the company behind Gears of War, and Netflix are both brimming with enthusiasm because The Coalition plans to launch a game in 2026. We won’t meet that deadline, but our goal is to create something that resonates with the release of the new game. This project offers David an opportunity to direct a war film, which he hasn’t done yet, and to put his unique spin on science-fiction within this well-loved intellectual property.
Leitch is primarily recognized for his extensive collection of action-packed films, such as “Fall Guy,” “Bullet Train,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” “Deadpool 2,” and the captivating “Atomic Blonde.” His upcoming project, “Gears of War,” marks another collaboration aiming to join the cinematic universe. Spaihts’ background is an encouraging factor for fans, given his involvement with franchises like “Dune,” “Doctor Strange,” “Prometheus,” and others. He received recognition for his work on “Dune” and has written the sequel, “Dune: Part Two.
In a statement, Spaihts described “Gears of War” as one of the greatest action games ever made, boasting captivating characters, an intricately designed universe, and a combat system that underscores the brutal reality of war and the significance of supporting your teammates. He expressed his excitement to contribute to bringing this game closer to cinema.
A potential surprise could be the addition of David Bautista, a renowned actor from WWE and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax, to the forthcoming movie. Bautista has shown his acting skills quite impressively on screen and reportedly expresses interest in joining this new production.
As a passionate gamer, let me urge you, Netflix, don’t hold back any longer! It’s high time we dived into an online series based on the thrilling world of Gears of War. I can’t help but keep pushing for this, Netflix. Let’s make it happen soon!
Currently, there’s no set release date for “Gears of Wars” movie. However, it’s unlikely that the film will come out before the next game in the series, titled “Gears of War: E-Day.” With the upcoming launch of “Gears of War: Reloaded” this month and the anticipated release of “E-Day” in 2026, fans have a lot to look forward to in the meantime.
