Fans hoping for a second season of the hit Hulu series Shōgun may be disappointed, but Netflix offers a six-episode martial arts drama that could appeal to those who enjoyed Shōgun. The original Shōgun premiered on FX and Hulu in 2024 and quickly became very popular.
Inspired by James Clavell’s 1975 novel and a 1980 miniseries, Shōgun takes place in 17th-century Japan, following a power struggle among leaders after the emperor’s death. This visually stunning and exciting series offers a fresh take on the historical period.
The first season of Shōgun concludes with the same ending as the original novel, leaving the main character, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), settled in Japan. This created a challenge for the show’s future, as it removed the question of what Blackthorne would do next and made the path for a second season unclear.
News just broke that production has started on Shōgun season 2, so it might be a long wait before we actually get to see it. Luckily, fans of Japanese historical dramas can enjoy another epic in the meantime: Last Samurai Standing, which is now streaming on Netflix.
Unlike Shōgun, this six-part series is a Japanese production. Last Samurai Standing takes place in the late 1800s and follows 292 warriors competing against each other for a prize of ¥100,000. Think Battle Royale meets Shōgun – it’s definitely worth watching.
Last Samurai Standing Is Netflix’s Answer To Shōgun
It appears Netflix created Last Samurai Standing to attract viewers who enjoyed Shōgun. Shōgun was a groundbreaking, big-budget series that offered a realistic depiction of historical Japan. By showing this culture through the eyes of a Western character, the show helped Western audiences gain a deeper understanding of a world they rarely see portrayed.
While Last Samurai Standing tells a fictional story, it uniquely highlights a little-known historical period. Compared to Shōgun, which blends history with fiction, Last Samurai Standing feels more authentic and realistic, likely because it’s a Japanese production.
While Shōgun featured moments of intense violence, they were brief. Last Samurai Standing, however, consistently shows brutal scenes. Grounded in actual history, the series is a thought-provoking satire – similar to Squid Game – that also explores compelling historical truths.
With Shōgun Season 2 Still Years Away, Last Samurai Standing Is The Perfect Replacement
Don’t expect season 2 of Shōgun anytime soon. The first season took over five years to go from announcement to premiere – it was announced in 2018, filming started in late 2021, and finally aired in February 2024. With production on season 2 just starting in April 2026, it could be more than two years before we get to see it.
Interestingly, a second season of The Last Samurai was announced in December 2025, shortly after the first season aired. This means we might see the new season of The Last Samurai before post-production even begins on Shōgun season 2. Fortunately, The Last Samurai delivers many of the same elements that make Shōgun so popular with viewers.
