The revival of “Little House on the Prairie” has found its key characters, Ma and Pa from the Ingalls family, yet the launch date for the upcoming adaptation based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books remains undisclosed as of now.
As a passionate movie-goer, I’m thrilled to share that Luke Bracey, known for his roles in ‘Elvis’ and ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’, will embody Charles Ingalls, the patriarch of the family, in an upcoming series. Joining him will be Crosby Fitzgerald, famous for ‘Palm Royale’, who’ll bring Caroline, mother of Mary and Laura, to life. Previous casting announcements hinted at Skywalker Hughes (of ‘Joe Pickett’) portraying the older sister. With these latest additions, the main Ingalls family cast is now complete, a sight that fans will be seeing in the majority of episodes throughout the series.
The idea of reviving “Little House on the Prairie” has roots as far back as 2012, when Sony Pictures declared they were working on a new movie based on the “Little House” books. However, the project stalled for several years before finally picking up steam this past January with a collaboration between CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios for a TV series. Tentatively scheduled for filming from June to October 2025 in Canada, Sarah Adina Smith (“Hanna”) is set to direct the Netflix adaptation of “Little House”.
Rebecca Sonnenshine (from “The Vampire Diaries”) and co-producer, while Trip Friendly, the son of original series producer Ed Friendly, is also serving as executive producer under Friendly Family Productions. When the series was announced, Sonnenshine expressed her profound affection for these books, as she had fallen in love with them at the age of five. “They fueled my passion to become a writer and filmmaker,” she said. “I’m privileged and excited to be bringing these tales to life anew for a worldwide audience with Netflix.
The Little House Franchise Has Been a Fan-Favorite for Decades
The book series titled “Little House on the Prairie” by Laura Ingalls Wilder is inspired by her actual experiences living in the Midwestern United States from 1872-94. These stories, while semi-autobiographical, highlight the resilience of the Ingalls family as they faced numerous challenges, including settling the West, constructing a new home, and adapting to various environments, all seen through the perspective of young Laura.
The stories from these books have been transformed multiple times onto stages and screens, but it’s the American television show that stands out as the most recognized adaptation. This series featured Michael Landon portraying Charles Ingalls and Melissa Gilbert playing Laura, running for nine seasons with a total of 200 episodes. Ever since its initial airing, this show has maintained popularity through syndication and can now be found on various streaming services.
Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie reboot does not have a premiere date at this time.
